A. Dry Stone Masonry is stone masonry built without the appearance of mortar, but mortar may be used, provided that it is held back from the face of the wall by 4 inches unless otherwise indicated, in order to create a dry stone appearance.
B. Cap Stones are the stones placed on top of the wall over the face stones. Cap Stones shall match the existing cap stones in height or be at least 10 inches in height unless otherwise indicated.
C. Face Stones are the exposed stones in the front and back faces of the wall. Face stones shall be at least 8” in height.
D. Backing Stones are the stones placed behind the face stones that make up the thickness of the wall. Backing Stones shall be at least 6 inches in height and at least 12 inches in length and width
E. Packing Stones are smaller stones placed in gaps between Backing Stones. Packing stones shall be at least 2 inches thick and shall be at least 6 inches in length and width.

B. Samples for Verification:
1. Submit three samples of new stones that are proposed for use. Samples shall exhibit the extremes of the full range of color and other visual characteristics expected in completed Work. Samples will establish the standard by which stone provided will be judged. The contracting officer may reject sample stones that do not sufficiently match the existing stone. Once approved, all new stones used in the wall construction shall closely match the approved samples in color, texture, and strength.
C. Work Plan:
1. Provide a plan indicating how existing walls will be disassembled and where existing stones will be cleaned and stored when the existing walls are disassembled. 1. Build a sample panel of a typical Dry Stone wall, at least 5 feet in length and 6 feet in height, as a sample of construction in a location approved by the Contracting Officer.
The sample panel, once approved by the Contracting Officer, may become part of the finished wall. Approval of sample panel is for color, texture, and blending of stone, and qualities of workmanship and overall consistency at matching pre-demolition appearance (or approved sample panel). Once approved, the sample panel will become the standard upon which other wall work at the location is compared to determine acceptability.

Remove stones from the existing Dry Stone Wall in a manner that does not damage the existing stones. Do not use equipment that damages stones. Methods employed that damage the stones may be rejected at any time by the Contracting Officer at no cost to the Government.
B. Store existing Cap stones, Tie stones, Face stones and Backing stones, in separate piles.
Store stones in a manner that will not cause damage to the existing stones.
3.2 CLEAN EXISTING WALL STONES THAT ARE TO BE RE-USED
A. Clean dirty or stained stone surfaces by removing soil, stains, and foreign materials before setting. Clean stones by power washing and if necessary thoroughly scrubbing with fiber brushes and then drenching with clear water. Do not use chemicals for cleaning stones.
3.3 SETTING OF DRY STONE MASONRY, GENERAL
CHOH 150819 04431 - 5
A. Layout walls using string lines or other approved means to provide the correct batter and coursing line. Raise the strings by the average height of the stones of each course.
B. Position Base Stones on the concrete foundation with the flat side down in a bed of mortar. Base stones shall not wobble or move.
C. Cover or break every joint between stones to avoid joints lining up vertically.
D. Lay Face Stones such that the longest dimension is going into the wall. Face Stones shall extend into the thickness of the wall at least 12 inches. Thinner stone “plates” may be used to build up the edges of larger stones to maintain height provided that they extend 8 inches into the wall. Face Stones shall be laid so that they do not wobble or move. Gaps between face stones should not exceed 3/4 inches.
E. Do not install Pinning Stones in the front face. Do not hammer stones in place so that other stones are displaced.
F. Place Tie Stones flush with the front face of the wall. Tie stones shall be placed such that they do not wobble. Place tie stones 36 inches apart maximum horizontally and vertically. Where tie stones do not extend through the thickness of the wall, lap tie stones at least 12 inches. Alternate tie stone locations between courses so that they are staggered and don’t align vertically.
G. Place Packing Stones in the core so that they fit tightly. Packing stones shall be as large as possible to fill the gaps between the Face Stones and Backing Stones. Do not dump in small rocks or gravel. Packing Stones shall be placed for each course of face stones before continuing to the next course.
H. Install mortar in the interstitial spaces between stones to form a solid wall. Hold mortar back 4 inches unless otherwise indicated from the exposed ace of the wall to create a dry stone appearance. Stones at the face of the wall shall bear on stones below so that each stone is supported at the face of the wall.
J. Install Cap Stones at the top of the wall. Cap Stones shall be placed such that the gap between adjacent Cap Stones is 1/2 inches or less.
K. All existing stones shall be re-used to the extent possible, particularly in the face of the wall. Install New Stones where needed to supplement the existing stone, in the back of the wall so that the face is not exposed to the extent possible.
L. Sort stone before it is placed in wall to remove stone that does not comply with requirements relating to aesthetic effects, physical properties, or fabrication or that is otherwise unsuitable for intended use.
M. Install drain pipes and weeps where indicated. Place large stones to bridge over the gap created for passage of the pipe. Provide 6 inches of bearing for the large stones. The gap should be only large enough to contain the pipe. Hold the end of the drain pipe back from the exposed face of the face stones by 4”.
N. Arrange stones in a coursing pattern similar to the existing walls.
DRY LAID STONE MASONRY RETAINING WALLS 04431 - 6
O. Arrange stones with color and size variations uniformly dispersed for an evenly blended appearance. Utilize the existing Face stones for the Face stones of the re-built walls.
Place New Stones in the interior or back face of the wall.
3.4 POUROUS BACKFILL
A. Where indicated, place porous backfill material in layers in conjunction with the adjacent fill. When a form is used between the porous backfill material and the adjacent fill, completely remove the form. Install geotextile, drain tile, and porous backfill as indicated. See Division 2 specifications.
3.5 DRAINAGE BOARD AND FILTER FABRIC
A. Install drainage board against the back of the wall. Fasten drainage board sufficiently to prevent displacement during backfill. Extend board to the filter fabric and pipe weeps.
Extend pipe weep from crushed stone through wall. Wrap crushed stone in geotextile filter fabric. Exit pipe weeps above grade. Hold the end of the pipe back within the stone wall so that the end of the pipe is not exposed.

3.7 QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTION
A. The CONTRACTOR shall employ a testing and inspection agency to perform inspections and to submit reports as specified herein. The Contractor shall provide the testing and inspection agency with a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to all required inspections.
B. The testing and inspection agency shall review the following checklist and verify conformance with the specifications and drawings for each day’s work:
1. The size and batter of the wall meets the minimum dimensions indicated.
2. The base stones do not wobble when walked on.
3. Stones have been placed in contact with all their neighboring stones.
CHOH 150819 04431 - 7
4. Stones are laid so that vertical joints between stones of adjacent courses do not line up.
5. The packing stones or mortar is placed with no gaps or spaces that allow movement.
6. The spacing and lap of tie stones has been verified.
7. The cap stones are placed level and do not move easily by hand.
8. Mortar is held back from the face of the wall.
9. Mortar is mixed in the specified proportions.
