6, Chapter 6—Construction Details provides technical information concerning the design and installation of construction details for quality slate roof systems. This introduction is intended to supplement the notes on the individual construction details.
Construction details applicable to slate roof systems are denoted as “SLATE-” followed by a number and possibly a letter (e.g., SLATE-1 and SLATE-1A).
The letter designation after the roof system type delinea-tion and number identifies NRCA’s order of preference for addressing a specific detail condition. For example, Construction Detail SLATE-3–Eave With Water and Ice-dam Protection Membrane depicts NRCA’s preferred method of addressing an eave detail using a water and ice-dam protection membrane with a stripping layer over the flange of the drip edge metal. Construction Detail SLATE-3A—Eave With Water and Ice-dam Protection Membrane depicts an alternative detail NRCA also con-siders acceptable based on any limitations described.
6.1 Information Applicable to All
Construction Details
The construction details in this manual provide a generic concept for each specific detail type shown. NRCA’s construction details likely will require modification to meet a project’s specific requirements. It is a designer’s responsibility to adapt the construction details to project requirements.
The information contained in this manual is intended to primarily address new construction details. When con-sidering reroofing projects, the Reroofing section of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Condensation Control and Reroofing should be consulted regarding the decision to re-cover or remove existing roof systems and for general information applicable to reroof-ing steep-slope roof systems. Once a decision to re-cover or remove existing roof systems is made, most information contained in this section can apply to reroofing.

6, NRCA suggests the construction details in this manual be used in the design of roof systems only after a number of criteria have been carefully considered, including:
expectancy conditions cluding potential material discharge onto a roof tem application methods
These criteria play important roles in the success or fail-ure of every roof assembly and must be considered by a designer to determine the appropriate components of a roof assembly, applicable specifications and construction details to be used.
In addition to the criteria previously listed, specific to a roof system’s construction details, NRCA recommends de-signers consider the following factors for slate roof systems.
Other Trades’ Components: Components that may be provided or installed by other trades that are incorporated into roof systems can be critical to the weathertight integrity of completed roof systems. These components may include:
penetrations
Definition of responsibility for the above components should be determined prior to job initiation.
Penetrations and Clearance: The maximum amount of space should be provided between pipes, walls and curbs to facilitate proper installation of flashings.
NRCA recommends a minimum of 12 inches of clear-ance between pipes, a minimum of 12 inches between pipes and curbs or walls and a minimum of 24 inches of clearance between walls and curbs. Penetrations should not be located in valley areas. A minimum distance of 18 inches is recommended between a penetration and valley center. See Figure 6-1.
NRCA advises against using roof surfaces for the instal-lation of satellite dishes, radio and television aerials and sign supports. Attachment to wall surfaces is recom-mended instead.
Metal Flashing Components: Apron, step, crick-et and backer flashings require some form of counter-flashing to cover and protect their top edges from water intrusion. Common counterflashing configurations are shown in Figure 6-2 on pages 396-398.

In some instances, the wall covering or cladding material performs the counterflashing function.
For additional information regarding metal counterflash-ing, including joinery and securement options, refer to the Architectural Metal Flashing section of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Conden-sation Control and Reroofing.
Job-site fabricated Components: A majority of the construction details illustrated in this manual depict job-site-fabricated construction. Many roof system manu-guidelines that permit the use of materials other than those indicated in these details. Flashing materials may vary greatly; individual manufacturer’s requirements should be examined and evaluated for construction compatibility.
