SPECIFICATIONS

The Atmospheric Remote Sensing Group in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder Colorado seeks to purchase a custom trailer with the following specifications for use as a mobile laboratory to house laser atmospheric sensors and electronics.

Trailer specifications:

0. Trailer feature design notes:

a. See included plans/drawings for approximate layout. (SolidWorks CAD documents for approximate design are available upon request.) Note that openings through trailer walls/roof must be positioned to minimize impact to structure of trailer. (i.e. to minimize number of studs, joists, ribs, stringers, etc. that need to be removed or cut.)

b. Please advise if proposed locations for various components may result in problems in design, construction, or application.

c. Where alternate materials/components/designs may be recommended or considered, please provide relevant information to assist in selection.

d. Exceptions to the dimension flexibility are those associated with the framing in the roof for an opening that will be completed when equipment is installed after delivery:

i. The crosswise position of roof opening frame (specified below).

ii. No items must interfere within the 6’ diameter circle (centered on roof opening frame) indicated on the outside top surface of trailer.

iii. No items must interfere within 30” square opening frame indicated on the inside surface of ceiling.

1. Enclosed, flat front, gooseneck trailer compatible with expected tow vehicle of 2019 Ford F350 crew cab, dual rear wheel pickup truck.

2. Trailer dimensions:

a. Main trailer body interior (excluding section over gooseneck or “bunk”): approximately 7’ height, approximately 8’ width, 23-24’ length

b. Overall trailer exterior: approximately 11’ height (including air conditioners and ladder), approximately 8.5’ width, 32-33’ length.

3. Trailer gross weight rating not to exceed 12,000 pounds.

4. Heavy duty, all tubular aluminum frame with structural members, joists, studs at 16” O.C. spacing or closer. (Minimal trailer and section flexure is needed for instrument stability.)

5. Non-perforated (screwless/rivetless) exterior aluminum skin construction is preferred. Any perforations needed for construction of trailer require effective, long-term sealing.

6. 2-5/16” adjustable gooseneck coupler with safety chains and standard 7-way trailer plug.

7. LED tail, signal, and clearance lights.

8. Tandem axle with air ride suspension and associated air pump and controls. (Proposed location for control system in lockable exterior cabinet under bunk section.) Tire-to-body clearance must accommodate tire chains.

9. Electric brakes provided on all wheels with battery/breakaway backup. (Proposed location for control system in lockable exterior cabinet under bunk section.)

10. Reinforced roof for walk-on service with top surface designed to shed/drain water and prevent pooling on roof.

11. Exterior roof access ladder mounted on road-side rear cargo door.

12. Frame in (and reinforce as needed) designated area (see drawing) for future 30”x30” opening in roof leaving outer skin in place. (We will cut through remaining surface for installation of equipment later.) Note that location crosswise in trailer is important and the centerline of the opening must be 5” (±0.5”) offset from the centerline of the trailer toward the curb side.

13. Flat interior floor over length of main trailer body (no beavertail/ramp) with minimum 3/4” plywood subfloor and single piece aluminum subfloor vapor barrier on underside. Alternate floor construction of comparable strength and sealing may be considered (e.g. extruded aluminum).

14. Four leveling jacks/legs located near the four corners of the trailer (mechanical, not hydraulic to avoid “leakdown” over time). May consider option of additional jacks at midpoint of trailer for support/stabilization.

15. Double rear cargo doors that swing open to the sides with curb-side door opening first and secured via locking bars and padlock. (Comparable to ISO shipping container doors.)

16. Two lockable (padlock securement with locking bars preferred similar to cargo door) 36” wide person entry doors on curb side. Hinge side of doors forward on trailer with approximate positions as shown in drawing.

17. Removable or retractable exterior stairs with grab bar and/or hand rail for each person door.

18. Four windows with unbreakable glazing (e.g. polycarbonate or acrylic) and lockable from interior. See drawing for approximate positions with one in each person door and two on opposite side of trailer. (Approximate size 20-22” square opening.) (Propose hatch style windows which have worked well for this in the past.)

19. Seven 6”x6”openings framed through walls with weathertight exterior cover plates installed. (These are cable and tubing feedthroughs.) Approximate locations are shown in drawings with two near roof and one near floor on each side of trailer, and one near floor in forward wall below bunk.

20. Minimum R14 insulation in walls, doors, ceiling, and floor with weather seal around all doors and windows. Wall/ceiling/floor/door cavities need to be well-filled and sealed.

21. Interior wall and ceiling surfaces minimum 1/4” thickness plywood. Equivalent surfaces that permit attachment of lights, electrical raceways, etc. may be considered.

22. Removable (attached via installed cargo tracks) divider with open passageway to separate main trailer section into two rooms. Installation position so that aft room is approximately 11’ long. Note that the location will likely require cutouts to allow clearance for the wheel wells. Also, note that the upper two corners have 6”x6” notches removed to permit cables and tubing to be routed through the partition.

23. Surface-mounted (not recessed) cargo attachment tracks (aircraft type L-track, 0.5“x1.375”) installed on floor, walls, and roof. (See drawing and details below for locations.)

a. Note that parallel L-track sections must be installed so that fitting attachment locations are aligned at the same position forward/aft for tracks parallel to the trailer length.

b. Similarly, left/right alignment of attachment locations are required for parallel tracks running across the trailer.

c. Cargo/equipment attachment rails must be attached to trailer frame members wherever possible for maximum strength securement capability.

24. Interior cargo attachment rails (see notes above) provided in the following locations.

a. Main trailer floor from a point 10’-6” from rear wall/door forward to riser wall and full length of bunk area floor: three lengthwise rails located at trailer centerline and +/- 30” from centerline respectively.

b. Walls (including forward walls in and below bunk area as well as rear cargo doors): three rails located parallel to and at 18”, 36”, and 66” from floor.

25. Exterior cargo attachment rails (see notes above) provided on the roof in the following locations:

a. Near the edge of the roof along entire perimeter of roof.

b. Two lengthwise rails located at +/- 16” from trailer centerline respectively. (Note exclusion circle on roof.)

26. Full-sized spare wheel/tire, jack, and lug wrench provided and suitable to trailer equipment. (Proposed tire storage on exterior bracket under bunk section. Proposed storage of jack and wrench in lockable exterior cabinet under bunk section if space available after brake and air ride controls installed as described above.)

27. Three rooftop RV type high efficiency air conditioners (110 VAC power), each with minimum 15,000 btu/h cooling capacity. Each unit served by a single dedicated circuit breaker.

28. Weatherproof power entry connector (Hubbell 4100B12W or compatible) with appropriate back box and cap installed and located so as to minimize possibility of damage during transit. (Proposed location under bunk section.) Additionally, a chassis grounding lug connected to the trailer frame nearby to the power connector is required.

29. Installed 120/240 VAC main breaker load center rated for 100 A with spaces for minimum of 24 full-sized circuit breakers.

30. Electrical and lighting power distribution notes:

a. See included plans for approximate layout. All interior wiring shall be installed in surface mounted metal raceway and boxes.

b. Wiring, raceway, and boxes shall be specified and sized to meet NEC code.

31. Electrical power distribution: Fourteen power boxes (each containing two, 20 amp duplex outlets = 4 connections in each box) mounted to ceiling with each box served by a single 20 amp circuit breaker. Approximate locations shown in drawing with seven boxes along upper corner on each side of trailer.

32. Interior lighting: six low-profile, 120 VAC, LED (color temperature 4000 K, color rendering index at least 90, approximately 5000 lumens output) light fixtures with four control switches installed as shown in diagrams. Notes on switch/light control connections:

a. One light switch positioned next to aft person door to control two lights in aft room.

b. Two three-way light switches to control three lights in forward room (one positioned next to forward person door and one high on opposite wall next to window.)

c. One light switch positioned on road-side wall of bunk area to control the light in bunk area.

d. Power to all lights may be served by a single circuit breaker.

33. Exterior and interior color is white. May consider trim color(s) of medium and/or dark blue. (See NOAA logo for colors www.noaa.gov )

34. Additional options that may be considered (Please consult.):

a. Cabinet installed over curb-side wheel well. (Adjustable shelves sized to accommodate documents/folders/manuals and miscellaneous office supplies.)

b. In-floor electric heat with anti-static floor covering.

c. Built in trickle/maintenance charger for trailer battery(ies).

35. Documents for final (as built) trailer specifications (vehicle gross weight rating, optimal load distribution, tire rating requirements, etc.) as well as operator and maintenance manuals are required. Engineering drawings/files of final design are requested to facilitate any future equipment installations or modifications.

36. Warranty specification documentation is required, a minimum of 1 year warranty is requested.
