STATEMENT OF WORK

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE ORDER

Name of Program/Office Requestor:

Dr. Julie Mattison, Staff Scientist/Facility Head

A. BACKGROUND

The NIA nonhuman primate calorie restriction project began in 1987 and incorporated 120 monkeys of various ages, and both genders into a longitudinal study of lifespan, healthspan, and disease. The monkeys have been studied extensively throughout their lives, yet one of the primary outcomes of the study remains assessment of their tissues. This analysis will provide important information about the effect of calorie restriction on the onset and severity of disease at the tissue level.

B. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROCUREMENT

The purpose of the proposed contract is to obtain the highest quality pathology analysis of the tissue collected from a unique, likely to never be repeated, study of calorie restriction in nonhuman primates. It is necessary to preserve and maintain the samples under optimal and consistent conditions and ultimately obtain an objective, quantitative pathology analysis.

C.

CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS

Following the gross necropsy and tissue collection by the pathology department of the Division of Veterinary Resources, NIH, samples will be transferred to the contractor for storage and analysis. Frozen tissues will be kept by the contractor in ultra-low freezers (provided by LEG) at –80 degrees C. Slides and paraffin blocks will be stored in appropriate containers in a temperature- and humidity- controlled room. All tissues will be assigned an accession number and an electronic catalog system will be maintained and provided to the Project Officer. The proposed contractor, Dr. Ikeno, an internationally recognized expert in geriatric pathology, will conduct a pathological analysis of the selected tissues. He will provide a written report on his analysis along with the quantitative analysis rating the severity of the pathology observed in the tissue samples. He will maintain a computerized record of his findings as well as the archive of the tissues that he has received and make these records and archive available to project scientists. The results of the pathology analysis will serve as a primary outcome of the longitudinal study of aging in nonhuman primates.

D.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Tissues will be provided to the contractor for storage and analysis but remain the property of the government.
