About this file

This document is a detailed Requirements document for BARD Subsea Cables issued by NUWCDIVNPT (Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport). The requirements specify the procurement of ten (10) subsea cables, each 68 meters long with precise technical specifications. Key requirements include a polyurethane outer jacket, exterior cable diameter not exceeding 16.5 mm, a minimum bend radius of 160 mm, and specific termination configurations with Birns Aquamate connectors. The cables must have a salt water depth rating of 6,000 meters, operate in temperatures from -2°C to +40°C, withstand three years of sunlight exposure, and support five deployment and retrieval cycles.

The electrical construction must include a CAT5E data cable, four 18AWG power conductors, and a drain wire, with all conductors being stranded wire. The mechanical strength member must support a minimum safe working load of 350 kg. Additional required components include socket and pin bulkhead connectors, dummy plugs, and locking sleeves. Extensive testing is mandated, including conductivity and insulation tests on all cables, a safe working load test on one cable, and a pressure test to 6,000 meters depth on all ten cables. The document includes detailed technical diagrams showing cable termination volume and a strain relief mechanism, providing precise visual specifications for potential vendors.

BARD Subsea Cable Requirements

General requirements

The vendor shall provide a quantity of ten (10) subsea cables 68 m +/- 10% (final length will be provided upon award).

The subsea cable shall contain both multi-conductor electrical components and mechanical strength components all contained within a single outer jacket. Polyurethane is the preferred outer jacket material. Other material meeting all other requirements will be considered.

Exterior cable diameter shall not exceed 16.5 mm.

The cable minimum bend radius shall be no more than 160 mm.

The subsea cable shall have a termination at each end which provides a means for connecting to the government system via a tapped hole that is 3/8 inch -16 UNC with a thread depth of 0.75 inches. The type of termination (over mold, potted metal body, etc.) is not specified as long as it meets all other requirements. . See figure 1.

The mechanical termination shall have a means to prevent rotation relative to the attached government system strain relief mechanism as shown in figure 2.

At the time of award, NUWCDIVNPT will provide a representative government system and strain relief mechanism for design validation and fit test. (Note: Government bulkhead connector will not be provided.)

At the termination on the subsea cable, all electrical conductors shall be broken out onto a single electrical free hanging subsea connector.

The broken out free hanging connector length shall be provided upon award, but will not exceed

500 mm.

On one end of the subsea cable, the free hanging connector shall have pins on one end and shall mate to a Birns Aquamate MCBH13FSS-ETH13. On the other end of the subsea cable, the free hanging connector shall have sockets and mate to MCBH13MSS-ETH13.

Environment

All components shall have salt water depth rating of 6000 meters or greater.

All components shall have an operating temperature range from -2°C to +40°C.

All components shall have a non-operational temperature range (storage and transportation) from

-40°C to +70°C.

All components shall operate in both fresh water and salt water.

All extruded conductor insulation shall be free of pinholes and other damage which could expose copper to seawater.

All components shall withstand three (3) years exposure to sunlight and still be fully functional.

All subsea cables shall be capable of supporting five (5) deployment and retrieval cycles over a three (3) year period.

Electrical Construction

The electrical construction shall consist of the following:

- QTY 1 minimum CAT5E data cable (8 conductors)

- QTY 4, 18AWG power conductors (600V minimum)

- QTY 1 drain wire (An overall cable shield is not required)

All conductors shall be stranded wire.

Mechanical Construction

The termination and electrical breakout shall fit within the allowable termination volume as shown in figure 1. The free hanging connector shall stay within this allowable termination volume with sufficient length to connect to the mating connector, that is, the free hanging connector shall not protrude through the side of the strain relief mechanism. See figures 1 and 2.

The mechanical strength member and termination shall have a minimum of 350 kg safe working load.

Additional Components

Vendor shall provide ten (10) socket bulkhead connectors (Part # MCBH13FSS-ETH13) or form fit function equivalent (6,000 m rated).

Vendor shall provide ten (10) pin Bulkhead connectors (Part # MCBH13MSS-ETH13) or a form fit function equivalent (6,000 m rated).

Vendor shall provide twenty-five (25) pin dummy plugs that mate to the socket Bulkhead connectors (Part # MCBH13FSS-ETH13) or form fit function equivalent (6,000 m rated).

Vendor shall provide twenty-five (25) sockets dummy plugs that mate to the pin Bulkhead connectors (Part # MCBH13MSS-ETH13) or a form fit function equivalent (6,000 m rated).

Vendor shall provide locking sleeves for all connectors (6000 m rated).

Test requirements:

The vendor shall perform a conductivity test and insulation test on all ten (10) of the manufactured subsea cables.

The vendor shall perform safe working load test on one of the manufactured subsea cable.

Conductivity Test and Insulation resistance test shall be performed on the subsea cable prior the safe working load test and post safe working load test.

The vendor shall perform a pressure test to rated water depth (6,000M) on all ten (10) subsea cables with free hanging connectors. The free hanging connectors shall have their corresponding dummy plugs attached when performing this test. A conductivity test and an insulation resistance test shall be performed prior to the pressure test and post pressure test. If vendor does not have access to a suitable pressure test facility, NUWC may be able to assist. NUWC shall review and approve the vendor pressure test plan prior to the performing the pressure test.
