1.0 Introduction
1.1 Scope. This Performance Specification (PS) establishes requirements and verification methods for the Lightweight Water Purification System (LWPS) to meet Section 3.0, System Requirements.
1.2 System Overview. The LWPS will be capable of purifying, storing, and dispensing water meeting the Tri-Service Field Water Quality Standards. Tri-Service Field Water Quality Standards are drinking water standards developed for the military by the Army, Navy (Marines), and the Air Force. These standards are included in Technical Bulletin - Medical (TBMED) 577.
The LWPS consists of three functional components: 1) Raw Water Feed, 2) Reverse Osmosis Purification, and 3) Product Water Distribution. The LWPS will produce at least 125 gallons of potable (drinking) water per hour from a fresh water source and 75 gallons per hour from a seawater source. An incidental operator will operate the LWPS on a part-time basis. The LWPS shall also include Basic Issue Items (BII) to enable a LWPS to operate for 600 hours and perform emergency repairs (excluding Class III Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL)). The service life of the LWPS shall be 20 years. In addition there shall be extended capability modules.
Extended capability modules are packaged for deployment with the LWPS to provide extended capability. Extended capability modules are as follows:
• Cold Weather
• Ocean Intake Structure System (OISS)
• Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) Water Treatment
• NBC Survivability
• Enhanced Pump Module
The LWPS will emphasize simplicity of operation and maintenance and is to be emplaced without material handling equipment and with a minimum of site preparation, set-up time, and manpower. The LWPS shall rely only on multi-fuel diesel engine direct drive pumps to move water through the system. Electric power from an external source shall not be required to operate the LWPS with exceptions for the Cold Weather module. The gaining unit operating the LWPS will supply electric power for the Cold Weather module when its use is required.
1.3 Use. The LWPS is intended to replace the Medium Fresh Water Purification Unit (MFWPU) LMT-3000 on a one for one basis to technically and logistically improve the supply of potable water to smaller Marine Corps units in forward deployed missions and throughout the spectrum of contingency operations in support of civilian agencies or host nations.
