Scope of Work
The goal of this project is to commission a memorable gateway installation that inspires and welcomes visitors to Key West while reflecting the unique character, culture, and identity of the island community. The commissioned public artwork is intended to enhance the streetscape through a bold, creative, and site-specific artistic vision while providing a welcoming experience for visitors entering Key West. The City envisions a public art installation that acknowledges and celebrates Key West’s diverse population, cultural heritage, and distinctive sense of place. Consistent with the City of Key West Art in Public Places Mission Statement, the artwork should seek to educate, enhance, and preserve the community’s cultural heritage while contributing to the aesthetic character and identity of the island. Successful proposals should demonstrate a strong understanding of the project site and incorporate an original artistic concept that is both memorable and uniquely suited to its location. The installation should enhance the visual experience of the gateway without distracting motorists or compromising roadway safety. The design should also thoughtfully accommodate visitors who may wish to stop, park, view, and photograph the artwork. The proposed entrance sign will be located approximately 7 feet from the path/trail and 6.5 feet from the guardrail. In accordance with FDM Table 215.4.2 (page 50), the applicable requirement is 5 feet from the face of the barrier, as the existing guardrail is a W-Beam with 6-foot post spacing (TL-3). For the portion of the project leaving town/outbound on SR 5, the sign will be located approximately 20 feet from the nearest travel lane. See the attached project outline for additional site information and proposed placement. All proposed artwork shall be **original and site specific** and must comply with all applicable **Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) rules, regulations, standards, and requirements**, including the standards set forth in the CAFÉ instructions. Final artwork and installation shall also be subject to review and approval by the **City of Key West City Commission**.
