2. Nature and/or description of the action being approved.
a. Acquisition purpose and objectives. The Division of ABC Services provides access to XYZ resources and services in support of the mission of NIH and several HHS agencies including the Office of the Secretary.
Project background. The Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research performs research in the fundamental brain mechanisms that allow sensory-motor coordination, specifically the visual/oculomotor system. In the Section on Neuronal Networks, the neural basis for the visual control of eye movements is of particular interest; these eye movements serve to produce clear vision by stabilizing gaze on a target, as in the case of smooth pursuit, or shifting gaze, as with saccadic eye movements. To examine this process, action potentials generated by neurons in the cerebral cortex of awake behaving Rhesus monkeys are recorded while the animal tracks a moving visual target. A critical portion of the experimental setup is monitoring the position of the monkey’s eyes.
Description of the supplies or services required to meet the agency’s needs (including the estimated value). Project title. Purchase of Eye Tracking System
Project description.
During experiments a computer driven projector system or monitor displays images that are designed to test visual tracking. Our laboratories rely heavily on the ability to monitor precisely the direction in which the eyes are pointing. Traditionally, we have used an invasive technique that requires surgery. Modern non-invasive methods, based on video tracking are now sophisticated enough that for some of our applications they may be sufficient. We have a duty to use these where we can as part of out ongoing effort to minimize the need for animal surgery wherever possible.
Current experimental setups using eye trackers track only one eye, and do so on the order of 200Hz. This procurement request is to obtain a novel eye tracking system with a higher frequency (2000Hz) as well as the ability to track both eyes (Binocular sampling). The system must include the following features to meet the Laboratory’s needs: (1) The refresh rate must be a true 2000, (2) Binocular sampling, (3) blink recovery time of 1.0 msec @ 2000 Hz, and real-time analog output.
