AMENDMENT 0005 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Question #1: As per Drawing A401 Detail C-4 "Typical Post Base Detail", shows a post base with a 5/8" stainless threaded rod and nut. Upon review of Specification Section 06 10 00, 2.5 "Rough Hardware" states that "Rough hardware exposed to the weather or embedded in or in contact with preservative treated wood, exterior masonry or concrete walls or slabs shall be as follows; stainless Steel hardware Type 304 or 316 shall be used everywhere." This would mean that the base detail, joist hangers, lag screws, etc. would need to be stainless steel and of course, domestically made. This will add a considerable cost to the project. The existing joist hangers, etc. are now galvanized. Is stainless steel what is desired?

Answer: #1: As per Section 06 10 00, Stainless Steel hardware Type 304 or 316 shall be used everywhere.

Question #2: Drawing A401, Detail B-4, "Typical Second Floor Post Splice Detail" - This detail shows a 6 x 6 post cap, which is manufactured by Simpson. Upon discussing this detail with the manufacturer, this detail was not meant for column to column splices but is a column to beam detail. Please advise if this is what is desired.

Answer: #2: For bidding purposes, assume that Detail B4 is correct. CEU Providence anticipates that the connection might not be correct and is working with the A/E to determine the correct connection. If Detail B4 is not correct then the contract will be modified by the KO at a later time.

Question #3: On Addendum No. 4, Question 4 states "Detail A4 on Drawing A401 shows to use 5/4 decking on decks."

There is plastic deck boards on some existing decks. Is Detail A4 correct? The answer to this was "For bidding purposes, assume that Detail A4 is correct. Minor alterations may exist on some buildings, and this will be addressed during construction." Presumably, this is indicating that the basis of the bid is to use pressure-treated #2 Southern Yellow Pine with rounded edges as the basis for the bid. On Drawing A401, Detail C-2 shows the decking to be 5/4 x 6 composite deck boards, round edge. All other details just show the decking to be 5/4 x 6. Please advise if the decking should be composite or wood;

and if composite a color should be provided if the deck is pressure treated, it would receive stain under specification section 09 93 00 - Staining and Transparent Finishing.

Answer: #3: Replace all the 5/4 x 6 with composite decking. Detail A4 references a generic 5/4 decking and does not address pressure treatment. However, the specifications call for the 5/4 decking to be composite. It is the Coast Guard’s intent for the composite decking to be gray.
