1.0 PURPOSE/SCOPE:
Define the procedure used to ensure that the ALC Data Center is secure and that computer room air conditioners are operating normally. This procedure is subordinate to the Service Process defined within the ISDINST 5222.1 (series).
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY:
2.1 ISD Systems Branch, Help Desk Team. Help Desk personnel working second and third shifts are responsible for ensuring that these procedures are performed during their shifts on an hourly basis. Weekend day shift personnel will also follow these procedures.
3.0 REFERENCES:
3.1 ISDINST 5222.1
4.0 PROCEDURES:
4.1 The second and third shift personnel should conduct an hourly inspection of the ALC Data
Center. Conducting this hourly inspection should be considered a top priority and should take precedence over other Help Desk duties. During weekends, the day shift personnel should also conduct hourly inspections of the ALC Data Center. The hourly inspection will consist of the following:
4.1.1 There are two doors that remain open to the data center during the weekday from 0500 to 1800. These doors go from the Apps Branch area to the coffee mess and into the Apps Branch Chief’s office. These doors are pictured below.
Ensure that these doors are closed beginning at 1800 and are closed during the entire day on weekends.
Effective Date: 5/11/2013
Also ensure that the door at the end of the ISD hallway remains closed at all times. This door should not be propped open by the cleaning crews. This door is pictured below.
4.1.2 Perform a walk around of the entire computer room. Look for anything that is out of the ordinary. If you hear any audible alarms coming from any of the servers, make a note of it in the Help Desk Logbook. If ALMIS is up, do not call any duty personnel during the night. Wait until at least 0700 in the morning. If ALMIS appears to be down, then notify the SE team duty person immediately.
4.1.3 Both air conditioner units should be operating. Air conditioners will be marked as Unit 1 and Unit 2. Record in the log the temperature and humidity displayed.
Record in the appropriate column.
Effective Date: 5/11/2013
If unit displays a temperature or humidity which is out of the normal range
(Temperature 40 degrees to 75 degrees, humidity 40% to 60%) or displays any alarms, contact the Help Desk Tier 2 Duty Person or Help Desk Team Lead.
Record in the logbook the time of the call and add a brief description.
4.2 If any of the TempElert probes should show the word “Caution” in a yellow bar, perform a quick verification in the computer room then contact the following personnel in this order:
1. Help Desk Team Lead –
2. Systems Branch Chief – Please see watch duty schedule for acting branch chief
3. ALC OOD –
Record in the logbook the time each is contacted and a brief description.
4.3 If any of the TempElert probes should show the word “Alert” in a red bar, first perform a quick verification in the computer room then immediately contact the following personnel.
Be sure to express the urgency of your call.
1. ALC OOD –
2. Setup the fans as described in section 4.4 then call the following as a courtesy call.
3. ALC Facility Manager -
4. Systems Branch Chief – Please see watch duty schedule for acting branch chief
5.
Record in the logbook the time each is contacted and a brief description.
Effective Date: 5/11/2013
4.4 There are three fans just beyond the double doors of the computer room. There are two small fans and one large fan. The two small fans are to be put in front of the two doors entering the computer room from the hallway as indicated by the pictures.
The fans should be plugged into the wall outlets in the hallway. Make sure the air flow arrow is pointed toward the computer room as indicated by the pictures.
Effective Date: 5/11/2013
To move the large fan you will need to get the pallet jack from the ISD warehouse area.
To get the pallet jack to pump up you must move the lever on the handle downward.
Position the jack under the fan; pump up and down on the handle until the feet of the fan are no longer touching the floor. Move the fan so that the air flow arrow is pointed toward the warehouse. The fan must be close to the rear opening of the computer room to plug it in the outlet next to the door.
Effective Date: 5/11/2013
Be sure to pull up on the lever on the handle of the pallet jack. This will allow the fan to go back down to set firmly on the floor. To start the fan, align the red mark on the plug with the red mark on the outlet.
NOTE: Be sure to push the plug in all the way.
