About this file
The document provided is a reference drawing and specification for the existing electrical power capabilities and distribution at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Cold Source facility. It details the installed electrical power, voltages, and corresponding distribution for the Cold Box and helium compressors. The key information includes:
The existing electrical power configuration consists of two panels - MCC-P and P-59. MCC-P powers three 150 hp compressors, a 6 kW Cold Box internal heater, Cold Box internal power, and two 7.5 hp compressor cooling water pumps. P-59 powers two additional 150 hp compressors. The total installed hp across both panels is up to 450 hp on MCC-P and 300 hp on P-59. The desired voltage for the compressors is 480V, 3-phase. The Cold Box internal heater is expected to handle the entire refrigeration load.
This information is relevant to the federal contract opportunity for a replacement helium refrigeration system for the HFIR Cold Source, which is being procured by the U.S. Department of Energy. The proposed replacement components must interface with the existing liquid nitrogen supply, helium storage vessel, and other main components of the current system.

HFIR Cold Source Electrical Power Capabilities and Distribution
Reference drawing: E-115230-CS-018 Rev. 33
Reference specification: GPS-200.210-001 Rev. 0
The following is a list of the existing installed electrical power and voltages and corresponding distribution for the Cold Box and helium compressors at the HFIR Cold Source facility:
Panel MCC-P
• Three (3) 150 hp compressors, 480 V, 3-phase (~336 kW)
• 6 kW Cold Box internal heater, 240 V, 3-phase (presently limited to 3.5 kW)
• Cold Box internal power (adsorber heaters, vacuum system, etc.), ~4.8 kW, 120 V, 1-phase
• Compressor cooling water pumps 2 x 7.5 hp, 480 V, 3-phase (~11.2 kW)
Note: The installed emergency diesel generator provides enough power to start one (1) 150 hp compressor on this panel.
Panel P-59
• Two (2) 150 hp compressors, 480V, 3-phase (~225 kW)
These are to be considered the limiting values of the system.
Combinations of compressors to satisfy the reliability and flexibility requirements stated in the specification may be proposed (MCC-P – up to 450 installed hp, P-59 – up to 300 installed hp).
480V is the desired voltage for the compressors. The Cold Box internal heater is expected to be capable of handling the entire refrigeration load.
