EXECUTION

EXAMINATION

PREPARATION

Remove all existing roofing system complete down to the existing roof decking.

Verify that the deck is dry, sound, clean and smooth. It shall be free of any depressions, waves, and projections. Cover with sheet metal, all holes over 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, cracks over ½ inch (12 mm) in width, loose knots and excessively resinous areas.

Replace damaged decking with new materials. This will require a Change Order. Notify Supervisor immediately upon finding damage.

Clean deck surfaces thoroughly prior to installation of ice barrier and shingle underlayment.

Eaves: The eaves are in good condition and can remain as is, however, the Vendor will ensure that they are installed properly and adequately vented with all parts present and in place.

Ridge Vents: cut continuous vent slots through the roof decking, stopping 6 inches from each end of the ridge.

On roofs without a ridge board, make a slot 2 inches wide, centered on the ridge.

On roofs with a ridge board, make two slot 1-3/4 inches wide, one on each side.

Eliminate old venting in accordance with industry/trade standards.

UNDERLAYMENT INSTALLATION

General: Comply with underlayment manufacturer's written installation instructions applicable to products and applications indicated unless more stringent requirements apply.

Shingle Underlayment: Install on roof deck parallel with and starting at the eaves. Lap sides and ends and treat laps as recommended in writing by manufacturer. Stagger end laps between succeeding courses at interval recommended in writing by manufacturer, but not less than 36 inches. Fasten according to manufacturer's written instructions. Cover underlayment within period recommended in writing by manufacturer.

Install in single layer on roofs sloped at 4:12 and greater.

Install in double layer on roofs sloped at less than 4:12.

Ice Barrier: Install, wrinkle free, on roof deck over plywood. Comply with low-temperature installation restrictions of underlayment manufacturer if applicable. Install lapped in direction that sheds water. Lap sides not less than 3-1/2 inches (89 mm). Lap ends not less than 6 inches (150 mm) staggered 24 inches (600 mm) between courses. Roll laps with roller. Cover underlayment within seven days Retain first subparagraph below if primer is required to enhance adhesion to concrete or masonry surfaces, such as chimneys or walls.

Prime concrete and masonry surfaces to receive self-adhering sheet underlayment.

Eaves: Extend from edges of eaves 36 inches (914 mm) minimum beyond interior face of exterior wall, but not less than 72 inches overall from edge of eaves.

Rakes: Extend from edges of rake 36 inches (914 mm) beyond interior face of exterior wall.

Valleys: Extend from lowest to highest point 18 inches (450 mm) on each side.

Hips: Extend 18 inches (450 mm) on each side.

Ridges: Extend 36 inches (914 mm) on each side without obstructing continuous ridge vent slot.

Sidewalls: Extend beyond sidewall 18 inches (450 mm) and return vertically against sidewall not less than 6 inches (100 mm). Lap the membrane over the roof deck underlayment.

Dormers, Chimneys, Skylights, and Other Roof-Penetrating Elements: Extend beyond penetrating element 18 inches (450 mm) and return vertically against penetrating element not less than 6 inches (100 mm).

Roof Slope Transitions: Extend 18 inches (450 mm) on each roof slope.

METAL FLASHING INSTALLATION

General: Install metal flashings according to recommendations in ARMA's "Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual" and NRCA's "NRCA Guidelines for Asphalt Shingle Roof Systems."

At Rake Edges: Install metal flashing over ice barrier and underlayment; set tight to rake boards; lap joints at least 2 inches and seal with plastic cement; secure with nails.

Step Flashings: Install with a head lap of 2 inches (50 mm) and extend over the underlying asphalt shingle and up the vertical surface. Fasten to roof deck only.

Cricket or Backer Flashings: Install against the roof-penetrating element extending concealed flange beneath upslope asphalt shingles and beyond each side.

Install a cricket or saddle on the ridge side of any chimney or penetration more than 30 inches wide as measured perpendicular to the slope.

Rake Drip Edges: Install gable drip-edge flashings over underlayment and fasten to roof deck.

Eave Drip Edges: Install eave drip-edge flashings below underlayment and fasten to roof sheathing.

Pipe Flashings: Form flashing around pipe penetrations and asphalt shingles. Fasten and seal to asphalt shingles as recommended by manufacturer.

ASPHALT-SHINGLE INSTALLATION

General: Install asphalt shingles according to manufacturer's written instructions, recommendations in ARMA's "Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual," and recommendations in NRCA's "NRCA Guidelines for Asphalt Shingle Roof Systems."

Install starter strip along lowest roof edge, consisting of an asphalt-shingle strip with self-sealing strip face up at roof edge.

Extend asphalt shingles 3/4 inch (19 mm) over fasciae at eaves and rakes.

Install starter strip along eave edge.

Retain first paragraph below for laminated-strip asphalt shingles. Diagonal installation is recommended by NRCA. Insert a particular offset pattern if required.

Install first and remaining courses of asphalt shingles stair-stepping diagonally across roof deck with manufacturer's recommended offset pattern at succeeding courses, maintaining uniform exposure.

The IBC and the IRC both state that asphalt shingles have the minimum number of fasteners required by manufacturer and comply with wind-resistance requirements based on Project location. Basic fastening for most asphalt shingles requires four roofing nails; some asphalt shingles require five. The IBC and the IRC both require special methods of fastening where roof slope exceeds 21:12. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

Fasten asphalt-shingle strips with a minimum of four roofing nails located according to manufacturer's written instructions.

Retain subparagraph below if asphalt shingles are installed in cold weather and could be subject to high winds. Factory-applied, self-sealing strips do not activate at lower temperatures.

When ambient temperature during installation is below 50 deg F (10 deg C), seal asphalt shingles with asphalt roofing cement spots.

Do not nail asphalt shingles within 6 inches (150 mm) of valley center.

Closed-Cut Valleys: Extend asphalt-shingle strips from one side of valley 12 inches (300 mm) beyond center of valley. Use one-piece shingle strips without joints in valley. Fasten with extra nail in upper end of shingle. Install asphalt-shingle courses from other side of valley and cut back to a straight line 2 inches (50 mm) short of valley centerline. Trim upper concealed corners of cut-back shingle strips.

Do not nail asphalt shingles within 6 inches (150 mm) of valley center.

Set trimmed, concealed-corner asphalt shingles in a 3-inch- (75-mm-) wide bed of asphalt roofing cement.

Retain "Open Valleys" Paragraph below if required. Some manufacturers do not recommend open valleys, but will accept them. Verify acceptance of valley treatment with manufacturers.

Ridge Vents: Install continuous ridge vents over asphalt shingles according to manufacturer's written instructions. Fasten with roofing nails of sufficient length to penetrate sheathing. Install along full length of ridge, including uncut areas.

Hip and Ridge Shingles: Maintain same exposure of cap shingles as roofing shingle exposure. Lap cap shingles at ridges to shed water away from direction of prevailing winds. Fasten with roofing nails of sufficient length to penetrate sheathing.

Retain subparagraph below if retaining ridge vents.

Fasten ridge cap asphalt shingles to cover ridge vent without obstructing airflow.

EXHAUST VENT COVER INSTALLATION

General: Install exhaust vent covers according to manufacturer's written instructions, recommendations in ARMA's "Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual," and recommendations in NRCA's "NRCA Guidelines for Asphalt Shingle Roof Systems."
