About this file
This is a Bridge Foundation Investigation (LRFD) geotechnical engineering report prepared by Terracon Consultants Inc. for Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., the engineering firm supporting the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners for the G.W. Oliver Road over Little Lotts Creek Bridge Construction Project in Statesboro, Georgia. The report documents subsurface exploration and geotechnical recommendations for foundation design and construction of a new bridge structure. The investigation included four Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings conducted to depths of 110-115 feet below ground surface, with boring locations at Bent 1 and Bent 4; no borings were performed at Bents 2 and 3 due to existing culverts. The report was completed on March 4, 2026, following the scope outlined in Terracon's proposal dated June 19, 2025.
The subsurface profile consists of medium dense sands in the upper 2-6 feet, followed by 56-65 feet of very loose to loose sands with occasional soft to stiff clays, and medium dense to very dense sands interbedded with loose sands at greater depths. Groundwater was encountered at approximately 7 feet below ground surface. The site is classified as Class E per AASHTO LRFD standards. Foundation recommendations include prestressed concrete (PSC) 20x20 inch piles for all four bents with nominal compression stress of 4.375 ksi and maximum factored structural resistance of 1,252 kips in normal environments. Minimum pile tip elevations range from +70 to +82 feet for Bents 1 and 4, and +55 to +68 feet for Bents 2 and 3. The report recommends dynamic pile testing (PDA) at one pile per bent and test piles at each bent location to determine final pile lengths. Corrosion testing of soil and water samples indicates no special provisions for corrosion protection are required, with pH ranging from 5.3-7.01, resistivity from 1,200-30,000 ohm-cm, chloride content from 21-47.2 ppm, and sulfate concentration from 12.9-97 ppm.

GENERAL INFORMATION
GEOLOGIC FORMATION Neogene undifferentiated Formation of the Georgia
Coastal Plain Region.
SUBSURFACE FEATURES Below the surface material, the site consists of medium dense sands to depths of 2 to 6 feet BGS, EL +140 to
+137 feet, followed by 56 to 65 feet of very loose to loose sands or occasional soft to stiff clays to (approx.
elevation) +82 to +76 feet.
Below the weak soils the site consists of medium dense to very dense sands interbedded with loose sands to the termination of SPT borings at depths of 110 to 115 feet, BGS, or (approx. elevation) +34 to+28 feet.
Groundwater was encountered in the SPT borings at depths of approximately 7 feet BGS, or (approx.
elevation) +137 to 136 feet. For additional information see the boring layout and boring logs.

(SPT) Boring 115 Project Area
Boring Layout and Elevations: Terracon personnel provided the boring layout and elevation readings obtained in the field using survey grade Trimble R12 system (Feet, NAVD 88)
Subsurface Exploration Procedures: The soil test borings were performed in accordance with ASTM D1586 with a truck-mounted drilling rig using mud rotary drilling techniques. The SPT samples were taken at 2-feet intervals in the upper ten (10) feet and at 5-feet intervals thereafter using the split-barrel sampling procedures. In the split barrel sampling procedure, the number of blows required to advance a standard 2-inch O.D. split barrel sampler the last 12 inches of the typical total 18-inch penetration by means of a
140-pound hammer with a free fall of 30 inches, is the standard penetration resistance value (SPT-N). This value is used to estimate the in situ relative density of cohesionless soils and consistency of cohesive soils.
The sampling depths, penetration distances, and other sampling information was recorded on the field boring logs. The samples were placed in appropriate containers and taken to our soil laboratory for testing and classification by a Geotechnical Engineer. Our exploration team prepared field boring logs as part of the drilling operations. These field logs included visual classifications of the materials observed during drilling and our interpretation of the subsurface conditions between samples. Final boring logs were prepared from the field logs. The final boring logs represent the Geotechnical Engineer's interpretation of the field logs and include modifications based on observations and tests of the samples in our laboratory.
Laboratory Testing
The project engineer reviewed the field data and assigned laboratory tests. The laboratory testing program included the following types of tests:
■ ASTM D2216 Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Determination of Water Content of Soil and Rock Mass (Moisture)
■ ASTM D422 Standard Test Method for Particle-Size Analysis of Soils
■ ASTM D4318 Standard Test Methods for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity
Index of Soils
The laboratory testing program often included examination of soil samples by an engineer.
Based on the results of our field and laboratory programs, we described and classified the soil samples in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System.

Job Narrative 680-268514-1
The analytical test results presented in this report meet all requirements of the associated regulatory program listed on the Accreditation/Certification Summary Page, unless otherwise noted. Data qualifiers and/or narrative comments are included to explain any exceptions, if applicable. Regulated compliance samples (e.g. SDWA, NPDES) must comply with associated agency requirements/permits.
Matrix-specific batch QC (e.g., MS, MSD, SD) may not be reported when insufficient sample volume is available or when site-specific QC samples are not submitted. In such cases, a Laboratory Control Sample Duplicate (LCSD) may be analyzed to provide precision data for the batch.
For samples analyzed using surrogate and/or isotope dilution analytes, any recoveries falling outside of established acceptance criteria are re-prepared and/or re-analyzed to confirm results, unless the deviation is due to sample dilution or otherwise explained in the case narrative.
Receipt The samples were received on 12/4/2025 1:49 PM. Unless otherwise noted below, the samples arrived in good condition, and, where required, properly preserved and on ice. The temperature of the cooler at receipt time was 1.9°C.
HPLC/IC
Method 300_ORGFM_28D: The native sample, matrix spike, and matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) associated with analytical batch 680-887526 were performed at the same dilution. Due to the additional level of analyte present in the spiked samples, the concentration of Chloride in the MS/MSD was above the instrument calibration range. The data have been reported and qualified.
No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.
General Chemistry No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.
