4.4 Purchaser Receiving Inspection Tests
The purchaser shall perform testing per Table III prior to acceptance of supplier certified material.
4.5 Test Methods
4.5.1 Sagging
The sagging characteristics of the adhesive shall be determined by fabricating a specimen (per Figure 1) with no face bonding adhesive between the upper facing and the core and using a 0.020-in. thick upper facing. Remove the upper facing, observe the degree of fill of the splice material, and measure the sag of the splice adhesive from the upper face of the core. Evidence of adherence of foam adhesive on the upper facing over the entire splice area will also constitute acceptability of the sagging test.
4.5.2 Expansion Ratio for Adhesive
4.5.2.1 Cut three 2-in. x 2-in. pieces of foam adhesive sheet material and measure the thickness of each at each corner and at the center to the nearest 0.01 in.
4.5.2.2 Place the specimens separately on a caul plate (12 in. x 12 in. min.) that has been covered with a suitable parting agent to prevent adhesion of the test pieces to the plate.

Figure 1: Peak Exotherm and Sagging Test Specimen
4.5.2.3 Place the caul plate with the adhesive specimens in a circulating-air oven and cure per Section 3.2.
4.5.2.4 Measure the thickness of each adhesive specimen at each corner and in the middle to the nearest 0.01 in. and calculate the expansion ratio as follows:
Expansion ratio = Average thickness of each specimen after cure
Average original thickness of the specimen
4.5.3 Density of Cured Adhesive
4.5.3.1 Measure the width and length of the cured specimens used in the expansion ratio determinations to the nearest 0.01 in. (0.3 mm).
4.5.3.2 Weigh each specimen to the nearest mg.
4.5.3.3 Using the average thickness of each specimen obtained during the expansion ratio determination, calculate the density of the cured adhesive as follows:
Density = Weight, g
Volume, cu. in.
x 3.81
4.5.4 Tube Shear Testing
4.5.4.1 Use drawn aluminum tubes, 5052, SAE-AMS-WW-T-700/4, or alloy of comparable compressive strength. The outer tube shall be of one inch O.D. and the inner tube of one-half inch O.D. Both tubes shall be 9 inches long and have wall thickness of 0.049 inch.
4.5.4.2 Pretreat the tubes using FPL etch or phosphoric acid anodize procedures per A-10 specifications S-F501 or A-F501, or an equivalent cleaning process with the understanding that the tube shear failure mode cannot be interfacial between the adhesive and the aluminum.
4.5.4.3 The quantity of adhesive required to fill the tube shear assembly annular volume (approximately 4 cubic inches) must be determined experimentally for each adhesive. This quantity normally falls in the range of 43 to 47 grams. Use the same quantity ± 1 gram for all tube shear tests with the same adhesive.
4.5.4.4 Cover each end with a suitable flow retardant cloth and assemble in a curing jig as shown in Figure 2. Tighten the bolts by hand.
NOTE: Other types of cure test fixtures may be used providing venting and tube alignment is maintained.
Figure 2: Tube Shear Curing and Test Fixtures
4.5.4.5 Cure per Section 3.2 with the tube in a horizontal position.
4.5.4.6 Cut test specimens 0.50 ± 0.02 inch long with flat faces normal to the tube axis.
Deburr specimens. Discard one specimen from each end.
4.5.4.7 Test by shearing the inner tube using the tube shear test fixture shown in Figure 2.
4.5.4.8 Apply load-to-failure at a head travel rate of 0.06 ± 0.02 inch per minute.
4.5.4.9 Maintain the specimen within ± 5°F of the required temperature for 10 minutes minimum before load is applied and 20 minutes maximum before test is complete.
Continuously verify test temperatures by a thermocouple attached to the inner tube of the specimen.
4.5.4.10 Calculate shear strength in lbs./sq. in. using the outer surface of the inner tube as the shear surface (1.571 times actual specimen length is bond area).
4.5.5 Peak Exotherm Temperature
4.5.5.1 The peak exotherm temperature shall be determined on a test panel consisting of two 0.020-in. x 12.0-in. x 12.0-in. aluminum alloy faces and a 2.00-in.-thick honeycomb core as shown in Figure 1. The core shall be spliced in the center of the panel. A suitable thermocouple shall be inserted in the approximate geometric center of the splice. The panel shall be cured as specified in Section 3.2.
4.5.5.2 Record the maximum temperature of the thermocouple during cure of the test panel.
4.5.6 Percent Volatiles Testing
4.5.6.1 Weigh approximately 2 grams of each sample to ± 1 percent. Heat for 2 hours at 217°F ± 5°F. Cool in desiccator and reweigh. Repeat until a constant weight is obtained.
4.5.6.2 Calculations:
Percent Volatiles = Weight loss
Sample Weight x 100
4.5.7 Reports
The supplier of the product shall furnish with each shipment three copies of a report showing the results of tests made on the product to determine conformance to the acceptance test requirements of this specification and a statement that the product conforms to all other technical requirements of this specification. This report shall include the purchase order number, material specification number, supplier’s material designation, lot number, date of manufacture, form and quantity.
