PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION

All SSMA products have a four part identifi cation code which identifi es the size (both depth and fl ange width), style, and material thickness of each member.

EXAMPLE:

MATERIAL THICKNESS:

(Example: 0.054 in. = 54 mils;

1 mil = 1⁄1000 in.)

Material thickness is the minimum base metal thickness in mils. Minimum base metal thickness represents 95% of the design thickness.

FLANGE WIDTH:

(Example: 1 5⁄8" = 1.625" 162 1⁄100 inches) All fl ange widths are taken in 1⁄100 inches.

MEMBER DEPTH:

(Example: 6" = 600 1⁄100 inches) All member depths are taken in 1⁄100 inches.

For all “T” sections member depth is the inside to inside dimension.

STYLE:

(Example: Stud or Joist section = S) The four alpha characters utilized by the designator system are:

S = Stud or Joist Sections* T = Track Sections U = Channel Sections F = Furring Channel Sections

C-STUD / JOIST TRACK CHANNEL FURRING CHANNEL

S-SECTIONS T-SECTIONS U-SECTIONS F-SECTIONS

Note: For those sections where two different yield strengths (33 ksi and 50 ksi) are shown, the yield strength used in the design, if greater than 33 ksi, needs to be identified on the design and ordering of steel. (i.e., 600S162-54 (50 ksi))

* For “S” members, see table on page 5 for stiffening lip length.

General Product Information Introduction

The increasing environmental concerns in the world today have caused us all to examine the way we live. These issues have affected every aspect of our lives, including the materials we use in construction. The use of cold-formed steel members as a building alternative is an intelligent choice with benefi ts to not only the environment, but also to the contractor, designer and developer.

Steel is not only a recyclable product, but also a stronger product allowing for longer clear-spans in the design process. Cold-formed steel is lighter providing ease of handling. It is a dimensionally stable product giving a “straight” wall with which to work. It doesn’t suffer fl uctuation in price, making it easier to bid a project. Quality control is stressed in all phases of the manufacturing process so the highest possible quality is delivered to the job site. The structural shapes manufactured are easily used for non-structural and structural assemblies, fl oor and ceiling joist assemblies, trusses, and panelized systems. They can be used as the main structural support system or as a supplement to heavy structural steel or concrete construction.

SSMA member manufacturers have been producing cold-formed steel framing members for many years, with each manufacturer having its own nomenclature and design values. A steel member with identical properties would be identifi ed by different names based on which manufacturer produced it. This created some confusion at all levels of the construction process.

The SSMA’s mission is to be the unifi ed voice of the steel framing manufacturing industry, by being the leader in supporting the development and maintenance of quality product standards and specifi cations, and by creating growth opportunities for cold-formed steel through research, marketing, and education.

Code Approval SSMA producer members demonstrate code compliance through their participation in the SSMA third party Code Compliance Certifi cation program, administered by Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI). Look for products and bundles marked with the SSMA and ATI label or logo, stating “CERTIFIED CODE COMPLIANT.” In addition, SSMA maintains an Evaluation Service Report through International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES). For details on both programs, as well as listing of manufacturing facilities participating in each program, go to www.ssma.com. See back cover of this catalog for additional information.

Material Specifi cations Products manufactured by SSMA members are formed from steel with a minimum yield stress of 33 or 50 kips per square inch (KSI). Unless noted otherwise, all products covered in this catalog are engineered to meet the 2001 edition with 2004 supplement of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) North American Specifi cation for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (2004 AISI Specifi cation) and other AISI standards referenced in section 2210 of the 2006 International Building Code (IBC). The structural properties included in this brochure have been computed based on allowable strength design. Not all products listed are available from all SSMA member companies – check local supplier or specifi c SSMA member for availability. For fastener tables, screw sizes and head diameters do not refer to specifi c fasteners which may or may not be available from SSMA members. Shear and tension data for screws was developed with the assistance of the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures (CCFSS).

Technical Assistance Professional technical assistance is available through any SSMA member to its customers. Using software developed specifi cally for the SSMA, a manufacturer’s technical representative can analyze load conditions, defl ection criteria and lateral bracing conditions not presented in this brochure. Computerized design can assist a SSMA customer with the most economical product selection for the specifi c application. Contact the SSMA manufacturer for this assistance.

General Product Information Thickness Table

1 Minimum Thickness represents 95% of the design thickness and is the minimum acceptable thickness delivered to the job site based on Section A2.4 of the 2004 AISI Specifi cation.

2 The tables in this catalog are calculated based on inside corner radii listed in this table.

General Notes for all tables

1. Where ‘AISI 2004 Specifi cation’ is referenced, it is the “North American Specifi cation for the Design of Cold-

Formed Steel Structural Members”, 2001 edition, including the 2004 Supplement, with US provisions.

2. The strength increase from cold work of forming has been incorporated for fl exural strength per AISI 2004

Specifi cation A7.2

3. The effective moment of inertia for defl ection is calculated at a stress which results in a section modulus such that the stress times the section modulus at that stress is equal to the allowable moment. AISI 2004 Specifi cation Procedure I for serviceability determination has been used.

4. Various sections may be manufactured with yield points of 33 or 50 kips per square inch (KSI). The yield point used for calculations is indicated in the tables.

5. For sections available in both 33 and 50 KSI, the specifi er must clearly indicate which yield point is required. For example: 362S162-54 (50 KSI).

6. When provided, factory punchouts will be located along the centerline of the webs of the members and will have a minimum center-to-center spacing of 24 inches. Punchouts for members > 2.5 inches deep are a maximum of 1.5 inches wide x 4 inches long. Members with depths 2.5” and smaller are maximum 3/4” wide x 4 inches long.
