Appendix E Protection Status of Flora and Fauna
Morón AB, Spain E-1 June 2015
The regional, national and global conservation and protection status of species detected in the survey are listed below.
The conservation status is according the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The IUCN assess the conservation status of species, subspecies, and varieties and even selected subpopulations on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction, and therefore promote their conservation. The result is The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, that provides taxonomic, conservation status and distribution information on taxa that have been globally evaluated using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. This system is designed to determine the relative risk of extinction, and the main purpose of the IUCN Red List is to catalogue and highlight those taxa that are facing a higher risk of global extinction (i.e. those listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable).
The IUCN categories are:
EXTINCT (EX) A taxon is Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. A taxon is presumed Extinct when exhaustive surveys in known and/or expected habitat, at appropriate times (diurnal, seasonal, annual), and throughout its historic range have failed to record an individual. Surveys should be over a time frame appropriate to the taxon's life cycle and life form.
EXTINCT IN THE WILD
(EW)
A taxon is Extinct in the Wild when it is known only to survive in cultivation, in captivity or as a
ENDANGERED (EN) A taxon is Endangered when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the criteria A to E for Endangered (see Section V), and it is therefore considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
VULNERABLE (VU) A taxon is Vulnerable when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the criteria A to E for Vulnerable (see Section V), and it is therefore considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
NEAR THREATENED (NT) A taxon is Near Threatened when it has been evaluated against the criteria but does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable now, but is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.
LEAST CONCERN (LC) A taxon is Least Concern when it has been evaluated against the criteria and does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened.
Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
DATA DEFICIENT (DD) A taxon is Data Deficient when there is inadequate information to make a direct, or indirect, assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and/or population status. A taxon in this category may be well studied, and its biology well known, but appropriate data on abundance and/or distribution are lacking. Data Deficient is therefore not a category of threat. Listing of taxa in this category indicates that more information is required and acknowledges the possibility that future research will show that threatened classification is appropriate. It is important to make positive use of whatever data are available. In many cases great care should be exercised in choosing between DD and a threatened status. If the range of a taxon is suspected to be relatively circumscribed, and a considerable period of time has elapsed since the last record of the taxon, threatened status may well be justified.
NOT EVALUATED (NE) A taxon is Not Evaluated when it is has not yet been evaluated against the criteria.
Many governments and entities develop their own red lists following IUCN categories adapting them to region, country or continent scales. In Spain, environmental competence is given to the autonomous communities (regional governments) though the environmental National Ministry periodically publish lists and red books of the whole country according to IUCN criteria. In the case of Andalusia, the regional environmental ministry of the Junta de Andalusia elaborates its own lists and red books that following the IUCN criteria to assess the state of threatened species at the regional level.
Morón AB, Spain E-2 June 2015
The protection status is determined for the existing legal normative and protection level for different species. Here, legislation includes the Habitats and Birds Directives, Bern and Bonn Convention statutes, and the Spanish and Andalusian Catalogue of Endangered Species.
The lists included all species detected in both 2007 and 2013 and those potentially present according to the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, except for the birds, which is not considered.
Flora and Vegetation
No plant species that were identified are included in the protection legal category of European, Spanish or Andalusian legislation. Only some spontaneous species have regulated its economic exploitation for regional normative. These species are:
• Chamaerops humilis
• Myrtus communis
• Pistacea lentiscus
No plant species identified are included in Red List of European, Spanish or Andalusian level either.
Some habitats identified could be considered corresponding to the Habitats Directive list:

C1.4. Humid grounds herbaceous vegetation *6420 Mediterranean tall humid grassland
B5.2. Riparian arboureus species recolonization vegetation
