Appendix C Habitats Observed on Morón AB
Morón AB, Spain C-1 June 2015
Table C-1. Habitat Types Identified as being of Natural Conservation Interest
Habitats Similar to Mediterranean Tall Humid Grassland (Natura 2000 code: 6420)
Morón AB Habitat Type B3: Occasional water flow drainage channels with rush colonization vegetation - Drainage channels with scarce water flow but an important edaphological humidity.
They are colonized mainly by different species of the sedge family and rush family like roundhead bulrush (Scirpoides holoschoenus).
Morón AB Habitat Type B4: Permanent water flow drainage channels with wetland herbaceous colonization vegetation - Drainage channels with almost continuous presence of water throughout the year, where some important ponds originate. They are colonized by typical wetland plant communities, following a humidity gradient. In the areas further from water there are species similar to those of habitat type B3, while in the banks there are helophyte herbaceous species. In the ponds, reed (Phragmites australis) and cattails (Typha angustifolia) grow. In those areas where streams appear, we also find the typical water plant species such as the watercress (Rorippa nasturtium-aquiaticum) and the waxy mannagrass (Glyceria declinata).
Inside the stream, small hydrophytic crowfood communities (Ranunculus sp.) grow.
Morón AB Habitat Type B5.3: Margin stream herbaceous vegetation - Lower slope zone in contact with the riverbed, occupied by helophyte herb communities typical of Mediterranean seasonal water streams.
Morón AB Habitat Type C1.4: Humid grounds herbaceous vegetation - In areas that retain less water but keep edaphic humidity, there are reed beds with different cyperaceous species typical of these soils: (Scirpoides holoschoenus, Cyperus longus, Piptatherum miliaceum, etc.), many of them similar to those mentioned in B3, B4 and B5 points
Habitats Similar to Southern Riparian Galleries and Thickets (Natura 2000 code: 92D0)
Morón AB Habitat Type C1.1: Tamarix thickets. Big bush or small tree communities dominated by species of genus Tamarix (Tamarix africana, Tamarix gallica). They are the most mature and stable vegetation able to grow in the banks of small lakes settled on loamish soil and with a non-constant level of water.

Descriptions of Habitats Found on Morón AB (2013)
Include agricultural lands and tree and shrubby vegetation units planted with non-productive purposes (forests, hedges, gardens, etc.).
A1. Intensive unmixed crops
They occupy a vast surface of the base, nearly 600 hectare (ha), and are divided into parcels of different size and shape. The bigger plots are located in the peripheral areas though there are some in the interior of the base. The primary crops consist of sunflower (Helianthus annus), grain (Triticum aestivum), and occasionally garbanzo bean (Cicer arietinum). All crops rotate among the different allotments leaving about 10% of the total surface of the land lying fallow every season.
Lands are treated with phytosanitary and phytocide treatments before seeding in January and February and with fertilizing products in the end of autumn, in November, December.
Anthropogenic Habitats
Morón AB, Spain C-3 June 2015 o A1a: runways area o A1b: Guadaira river area o A1c: E and SE area o A1d: Interior base corps
A2. Planted Forest
They comprise three different units:
o A2.1. Pinus Plantations (Pinus pinea). Young pinus mass (planted in 1995) with some clearing areas. It is situated on a pasture dominated by ruderal and weed herbaceous species.
They occupy approximately 100 ha of old farming lands in the eastern part of the base. The grass is harvested at least once in the spring. In the last years many species of autochthonous trees and shrubs have been planted such as mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) myrtle (Myrtus communis), carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), fig tree (Ficus carica), ilex (Quercus ilex subsp.
ballota), etc.
o A2.2. Eucalyptus plantations (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Dense and old reduced mass of trees surrounding a small pond of non-permanent water (C2) where Typha dominguensis grows. Enclosing them there is a small reedbed of Phragmites australis and other species of humid grounds (Rubus ulmifolius).
A3. Planted tree lines
Monospecific plantations outlining some of the roads in the base.
o A3.1. Line Platanus plantations (Platanus orientalis) o A3.2. Line Eucalyptus plantations (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) o A3.3. Line Ulmus plantations (Ulmus minor) o A3.4. Line Morus plantations (Morus alba) o A3.5. Line Celtis plantations (Celtis australis)
A4. Planted oleander hedges (Neurium oleander)
Linear oleander plantation surrounds the gateway to the oldest part of the Base.
A5. Garden Spaces
Leisure zones or peripheral to buildings areas with small grasslands and exotic and native group of trees and shrubs. Lawn areas are made of the species that spontaneously grow there, mainly annual weed and ruderal hebaceus plants. These lawns need of an intense maintenance in their growing phase, cutting them many times to keep a high of 2-4 inches (5-10 cm). In the hot season, they are watered just in some buildings so that most of them get dried up in the summer. They are seldom manured.
o A5a: small spaces at the north and south o A5b: central area o A5c: old Spanish base area
Morón AB, Spain C-4 June 2015
A.6. Gleditsia sub-spontaneous woods
Small areas near old channels that retain certain degree of edaphic humidity and that have been colonized by the Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos).
These communities include herbaceous autochthonous species forms that spontaneously grow in the Base lands. Their presence, appearance and/or upkeep depend on the handling of the area where they grow.
B1. Subnitrophilous annual grasslands
Open spaces filled by pasture lands of annual weed and ruderal herbs such as the surroundings of the airfield, the ammunition and explosives storage, fuel storage, allotments between buildings, the border of roads and drainage channels, crops edges etc. They have similar features than the garden spaces. In both cases their sub-nitrophilous nature stems from their origin (base grounds are old crops lands) and their upkeep, with periodical cuttings as growing which both avoid plant succession and mean a periodical organic matter input.
o B1a: runways area o B1b: large areas at the east air base o B1c: grassland between buildings o B1d: bands next to roads
B2. Anthropogenic herb stands
Altered and turned over soils used as waste deposit, or recent soil collections without maintenance, covered by nitrophilous herbs among which some big and thorny species like (Sybilum marianum) stand out. These also included ruderal herbaceous vegetation of removed grounds, with which share many species.
B3. Occasional water flow drainage channels with humid grounds vegetation
Drainage channels with scarce water flow but an important edaphological humidity. They are colonized mainly by different species of the sedge family and rush family like roundhead bulrush (Scirpoides holoschoenus).
B4. Semi-permanent water flow drainage channels with wetland herbaceous colonization vegetation
Drainage channels with almost continuous presence of water throughout the year, where some important ponds are originated. They are colonized by typical wetland plant communities located following a humidity gradient. In the remoter part from water there are species similar than the ones previously mentioned, while in the banks there are helophyte herbaceous species. In the ponds, reed and cattails (Phragmites australis) and (Typha angustifolia). In those areas where some stream appears, we also find typical plant species such as the watercress (Rorippa nasturtium-aquiaticum) and the grass (Glyceria declinata) lining the water. Inside the stream, small hidrophytic crowfood communities (Ranunculus sp.)
grow.
Plant communities typical of humid soils, wetlands and streams. They included the two seasonal small pools in the northwestern point of the Base, the little pond between eucalyptus and the other in the

Spanish magazine, as well as the Guadairilla River. In these sites, vegetation is the result of a natural colonization process, without (or little) human intervention, so has led to consider these communities as natural habitats.
C1. Wetland vegetation of Mediterranean seasonal ponds
There are different vegetation communities set out along the humidity gradient.
o C1.1. Riparian woody vegetation. Big bushes or small/medium trees communities with Populus alba, Ulmus minor, Tamarix (Tamarix africana, Tamarix gallica) and some subspontaneum species (Gledistsia triacanthos). In northern pools only appears Tamarix.
o C1.2. Beds of Arundo. Reed formations (Arundo donax) growing far from the banks but in humid soils, near to the pond slope. Arundo donax is not anautochthonous species, but is naturalized in Mediterranean area for centuries. It is considered a very invasive species.
o C1.3. Reedbeds of Phragmites and Typha. Big helophyte formations that grow on the small lake shore taking root into its bank, the Typha dominguensis is placed inner than the reed (Phragmites australis) o C1.4. Humid grounds herbaceous vegetation. In areas that retain less water but keep edaphic humidity there are reedbeds with different grasses cyperaceouss species typical of these soils: (Scirpoides holoschoenus, Cyperus longus, Piptatherum miliaceum, etc.), many of them similar to those mentioned in B3 and B4 points.
C2. Temporary ponds and pools.
Freshwater ponds and pools, or parts of such freshwater bodies those become periodically dry, with their associated animal and vegetal pelagic and benthic communities.
C3. Temporary running waters.
Watercourses that cease to flow for part of the year, leaving a dry bed or pools (Guadairilla River).
Isolated samples of different species of trees planted long time before or of subspontaneous nature, dispersed along the Base outside the garden spaces.

D. Isolated Trees
Morón AB, Spain C-6 June 2015
Small groups or isolated samples of autochthonous shrub species (Pistacia lentiscus, Chamaerops humilis, Retama sphaerocarpa, etc.) that grow spontaneously. Naturally these species are part of the Mediterranean bush that goes with the holm oaks forest that lives there in the past before using the zone for agricultural purposes.
