B. Sequencing and Scheduling. Submit a detailed installation plan describing the schedule for drilling and/or excavation, installation of steel reinforcement and concrete placement with anticipated site conditions so that each excavated shaft is poured the same day that the drilling is performed.
1. Concrete testing shall be performed by personnel holding current ACI Field Level I accreditation.
1.4. PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Prepare surfaces to receive concrete in accordance with Section 31 00 00 and Section 31 23 33.
B. Weather Limitations. Proceed with installation preparation only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit work to proceed without water entering into the area of excavation.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1. EQUIPMENT
Provide all equipment needed to perform the work, including but not limited to tremies, mixers, pumps, hoses, trowels, screeds, and hand tools.
2.2. MATERIALS
A. Ready-Mix Concrete
1. Ready-Mix concrete and mix design conforming to ACI 117, ACI 301, and ACI 304R, minimum compressive strength 4,000 psi at 28 days. Minimum entrained air content of 4 percent.
2. Portland cements conforming to ASTM C150/C150M, Type II. Provide one brand and type of cement for formed concrete having exposed-to-view finished surfaces.
3. Potable water conforming to ASTM C94/C94M.
4. Measure, batch, mix and deliver concrete according to ASTM C94/C94M and furnish batch ticket information.
B. Neat Cement Grout
1. Portland cement shall conform to ASTM C150/C150M, Type I or II.
C. Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM)
1. Portland Cement. Portland cement shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C150, Type II.
2. Fly Ash. Fly Ash shall conform to ASTM C618, Class C or F.
3. Coarse Aggregate. Coarse aggregate, if used, must meet the requirements of this specification. Any aggregate gradation which produces performance characteristics of the flowable fill specified herein will be accepted, except as follows: The amount of material passing the #200 sieve shall not exceed 20 percent. Also, liquid limit and plasticity index shall not exceed 25 and 5, respectively.
4. Water. Water used in mixing shall be free of oil, salt, acid, alkali, sugar, vegetable matter or other substances injurious to the finished product.
5. Chemical Admixtures. Chemical Admixtures shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C494.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1. PREPARATION
A. Grout. Neat cement grout and bentonite grout shall conform to requirements for sealing materials as described in Administrative Rules of Montana 36.21.
Mix neat cement grout and bentonite grout using mud pumps, paddle mixers, and mixing tanks as needed to meet the requirements of Sections 33 21 00 and 33 29 00.
B. Portland Cement Concrete.
Protect existing structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements, and other facilities from damage caused by settlement, lateral movement, vibration, and other hazards created by excavation and backfilling or other construction activities.
Concrete Placement
1. Keep all equipment, including but not limited to, mixers, pumps, hoses, tools and screeds clean and free of set concrete throughout the placement operation.
2. Convey concrete from the mixer to place of deposit by best industry methods that prevents segregation and loss of material. Size and design the equipment for conveying concrete to ensure uniform, continuous placement of concrete.
3. Place concrete in accordance with ACI 318.
4. Place concrete in a continuous operation and without segregation into dry excavations whenever possible after inspection and written approval by the Contracting Officer. Use all practicable means to obtain a dry excavation before and during concrete placement.
5. Protect freshly placed concrete from premature drying and excessive cold or hot temperatures. When hot weather conditions exist that would impair quality and strength of placed concrete, comply with ACI 305R. Comply with ACI 306.1 for cold-weather protection.
Concrete Test Reports
1. Sample and test concrete for quality control during placement.
2. Sample freshly placed concrete for testing in accordance with ASTM C172.
3. Make concrete test specimens for compressive strength at 7 and 28 days for each day’s pour conforming to ASTM C31/C31M. Compression test concrete in accordance with ASTM C39/C39M.
4. Test slump for each day’s pour in accordance with ASTM C143/C143M.
5. Test air for each day’s pour in accordance with ASTM C231.
C. CLSM
CLSM, also known as flowable fill, shall be designed to achieve a target 28-day compressive strength of 150 psi and shall not exceed 500 psi. Test specimens shall be prepared in accordance with ASTM D4832. Compressive strength tests shall be performed at frequencies of at least one test set per 150 cubic yards and at least one test set per day of placement.
The Contractor shall submit a mix design based upon a trial batch or field experience, including the proportions and sources of all constituent materials, air entraining, and (optionally) other admixtures, expressed as cubic yard batch weights. Measured compressive strength, air content, and yield for the mix design trial batch (or for the field experience-based mix design) shall be submitted.
The consistency of the fresh mixture shall be such that the mixture may be readily placed without segregation. High flowability material generally has a slump greater than 8 inches. As an alternative to slump testing, desired consistency may be approximated by filling an open-ended, 3-inch diameter cylinder, 6 inches high, with the mixture, inverting, and immediately pulling the cylinder straight up. The correct consistency of the mixture will produce an approximate 8-inch diameter circular-type spread without segregation. Adjustments of the proportions and constituents may be made to achieve proper solid suspension and optimum flowability. However, strength requirements and proper yield shall be maintained for the actual batch weights.
