Text version
Inboard and Outboard engines are original and nearing the end of their life cycle. Support beams are at half their original thickness at compression points. The deflection of the engines is typical of the age and amount of fires. Note New engines and upper wing have built in water misters and stainless steel igniter housings, stainless steel plumbing, and boiler plate high temp structural.
All 15 coax valves appear in fair condition, however the original plumbing feeding each valve / fire scene is heavily corroded due to dissimilar metal connections and lack of corrosion prevention measures taken during installation. During this visit was tasked to replace fire scene plumbing at the wheel well, pax, outboard and inboard engines. During the refit we determined that the plumbing needed to be replaced from the coax valve out. So these scene now have all new sch 80 stainless steel piping and fittings. We also found a couple air connections which where damaged and these have been refit.
The Spill The Outboard engine Each have new plumbing from the coax valves out to the burners There is a flame deflection shieling pipe installed over all riser piping which will prevent the piping from bending under heat stress.
Inboard engine new piping showing the deflection pipe shield Note the shield is welded to the mockup.
Shown here is the New piping from the wheel well coax valve over to the riser and deflector shield piping to the new burner.
Control Tower LP piping upgrades and compliance modifications
All the ridged black iron sch 40 restrictors have been removed. New Sch 80 and flex stainless steel restrictors have been installed . Systems was tested for leaks.
The HPRV’s have been re-piped to the NFPA 58 required distance away form the control tower electrical systems. Stainless steel header and piping was used to perform this modification.
I am concerned with the air piping which was installed in 2013. We found during the installation of the new compressor (shown in the next slides) that this black iron piping is rusting from the inside as well as the outside. The sludge we blew out of the piping is and will continue to cause internal damage to the Norgren control valves and the Coax fuel valves. I suggest budgeting to remove all 120 feet of this pipe, supply a 12 inch trench from the compressor to the control tower, install an HDPE (no corrosive) air line. Where transitioning use stainless steel piping. Change all piping and fittings at accumulator to stainless steel.
This is the old compressor and dryer.
The compressor has been replaced. We found the dryer leak the fire department had mentioned. Inside the dryer is the moisture weep bowl.
We found sludge inside the containment bowl. After cleaning, lubricating, and reassembly testing showed no leaks.
The New compressor and dryer have been installed and tested. Flex lines have been installed to prevent stress on appliances and Dryer components. I will be wiring the dryer to come on / off when the air compressor is operating. Please keep the cover on the compressor when not being used this will help prevent debris from entering the system. I suggest budgeting to enclose the electrical / compressor / dryer area. Will require 24 inches of additional concrete around perimeter, two doors, framing and siding for a 10 x 20 x 8’3” enclosure.

All doors and shutters on the STU have been inspected. Handles, hold backs, and latches have been added and the egress is now in compliance with NFOA 1402, 1403.
Hold backs installed where they where missing
Per AFOSH Signage has been installed where required
