About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics Document for a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Prototyping System, specifically for the LPKF ProtoMat S64 or equivalent alternative equipment.

The document establishes mandatory performance, physical, and operational specifications that any "Brand Name or Equal" submission must meet or exceed to qualify. Essential functional and performance characteristics include: milling spindle speed of at least 60,000 RPM for processing fine structures down to 100 µm; mechanical resolution of minimum 0.47 µm (0.02 mil) in X/Y axes and 0.2 µm in Z axis; repeatability tolerance of ± 5 µm; a fully automatic tool changing system capable of holding and cycling a minimum of 15 tools; sensor-controlled automatic milling depth and width adjustment; and an integrated camera system for automatic optical fiducial recognition, board alignment, and tool change monitoring. Physical requirements specify a maximum working area of 305 mm x 229 mm x 8 mm, maximum material accommodation of 330 mm x 250 mm x 26 mm, a heavy granite or equivalent high-density vibration-dampening base, an integrated vacuum table workholding system, and capability to include or accept a solder paste dispensing unit. Operational and software requirements mandate integrated CAM/system software equivalent to LPKF CircuitPro Basic with standard CAD data importing capability, material parameter library management, and step-by-step process guidance. The spindle and milling depth sensor must feature pneumatic self-cleaning functionality to support low-maintenance operations and enable in-house rapid prototyping, milling, drilling, and routing capabilities.

SUBJECT: Salient Characteristics Document for PCB Prototyping System (Brand Name or Equal:

LPKF ProtoMat S64)

The requested equipment is required to support in-house rapid prototyping, milling, drilling, and routing of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). To meet mission requirements, any "Brand Name or Equal" submission must meet or exceed the physical, functional, and performance characteristics outlined below.

1. Essential Functional and Performance Characteristics

• Milling Spindle Speed: Must be capable of reaching a maximum rotation speed of at least 60,000 RPM to process fine structures down to 100 µm.

• Mechanical Resolution: Must offer a minimum resolution of 0.47 µm (0.02 mil) in the X/Y axes and 0.2 µm in the Z axis.

• Repeatability: Must maintain a repeatability/precision tolerance of ± 5 µm (± 0.2 mil).

• Tool Changing System: Must feature a fully automatic tool change mechanism capable of holding and cycling a minimum of 15 tools simultaneously without operator intervention.

• Milling Depth/Width Control: Must include sensor-controlled, automatic milling depth and width adjustment.

• Fiducial Recognition: Must incorporate an integrated camera system for automatic optical fiducial recognition, board alignment, and tool change monitoring.

2. Essential Physical Characteristics

• Maximum Layout/Working Area (X/Y/Z): Must be able to process boards up to at least 305 mm x 229 mm x 8 mm (12" x 9" x 0.3").

• Maximum Material Size: Must physically accommodate substrates up to 330 mm x 250 mm x 26 mm (13" x 9.8" x 1").

• Base Construction: The machine must be built on a heavy granite (or equivalent high-density, vibration-dampening) base to ensure highest geometric accuracy and minimal resonance during 60,000 RPM operations.

• Workholding: Must include an integrated vacuum table system for securing flexible and rigid substrates during the milling process.

• Dispensing Capability: Must include or be capable of accepting a solder paste dispensing unit.

3. Operational & Software Requirements

• Software Integration: Must include integrated CAM/system software (equivalent to LPKF CircuitPro Basic) capable of importing standard CAD data, managing material parameter libraries, and providing step-by-step process guidance.

• Self-Cleaning: The spindle and milling depth sensor must feature pneumatic self-cleaning functionality to support low-maintenance operation.
