Williams Creek (Shoup) Bridge Replacement

# General Technical Question Answer Date 1 x

The specifications in Section 555 calls out for an AISC Quality Certification Program. The erector is to have ACSE in order erect the bridge steel.

Can this requirement be waived? Bridge builders typically do not get this certification because it is not common to require. The AISC Erector certification is more applicable to steel buildings.

Please see the attached drawings. Drawing H.18 has a note that specifically directs me to “mill” the beam ends @ the Arch splices. The other splices do not have a note for milling but they are also detailed without any gap. My question is, do all the splices require milling the beam ends?

The milled ends only applies to the arch rib splices (H.21) because it is in full compression and uses bearing on the actual surface of the rolled member to help transfer some of this compression across the splice. The note is not needed on H.22 because that is for the tie girder which is a tension member. The splice at the top of the arch knuckle to the arch rib on H.23 is also a compression splice. The callout for the bolted splice points to H.21, which is where the direction for the milled ends is.
