Test Pit Observations Pleasant Valley Road Relocation

MT FLATHEAD 543(1)

This memorandum provides test pit observations for Pleasant Valley Road.

1. Test Pit and Grab Sample approximate locations (see project physical data for test results):

2. All test pits and grab samples have similar materials. Approximately the top 6+ inches of the test pits contain some vegetative layers including vegetative debris and organic material. The underlying material meets the requirements for embankment construction.

Note:

• Test pits and grab samples show high silt content in the existing material; therefore, the material may be moisture sensitive if the moisture content is over optimum. Work should be sequenced to limit the area of disturbance to avoid exposure to precipitation.

Excavated and embankment areas should be a shaped to drain and any irregularities in the surface removed to eliminate areas that could hold water.

• Even if the materials are at or below optimum moisture content, hauling directly on these materials could result in reduced strength of the material and require additional work to stabilize the area. Care should be used to evaluate moisture content of excavated materials and embankments such that haul loads do not induce pumping of the underlying soils. Continuous hauling across this material should be minimized to prevent reduced stability of the roadbed.

3. Potholed existing roadway within the existing road prism and visually evaluated the surfacing materials. The existing Pleasant Valley road generally consists of 18 to 20 inches of existing crushed aggregate with high fines content. The existing crushed aggregate can be used for embankment construction.
