About this file
This document outlines the salient characteristics for dental handpieces required under a solicitation by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Veterans Integrated Service Network 6. Key requirements for the dental handpieces include high-speed rotation of at least 390,000 RPM with low noise less than 59 dB, LED illumination with no shadow in the visual field providing over 25,000 lux, ergonomic design to prevent hand and wrist fatigue with 360-degree rotation, high rotor efficiency, multi-point irrigation through a minimum of four spray outlets on the head to reduce heat from friction, an anti-retraction valve on the corresponding handpiece coupler to prevent backflow of fluids and debris, resistance to pulling aerosols into the turbine head, meeting all hospital infection control requirements through thermo washer disinfectability and sterilizability, and a long service life with comprehensive warranty for repair or damage under more than average use. Physical characteristics include a non-slip grip profile, highly scratch resistant surface, light weight of less than 35 grams for high-speed handpieces and a small head size of less than 10.5mm, head height of less than 17.2mm with a 16mm bur for difficult access, maximum length of 21mm, a push button chuck system, and ceramic ball bearings to reduce vibration and noise critical for treating patients with PTSD.

Salient Characteristics for Dental Handpieces
(A) Functions to be performed
· High speed rotation for efficient work
· High Torque (power)
· High irrigation from working head of handpiece
· No air escaping turbine.
· LED illumination
(B) Performance required
· High-speed rotation with minimum 390,000 RPM.
· Low noise operation – 59 dB (A) or less for protection of patient and staff
· No shadow of from LED lighting in visual field.
· Minimal 25,000 Lux illuminating power
· Ergonomically designed to prevent hand/wrist fatigue with 360-degree rotation capability
· High Rotor Efficiency
· Multi-point irrigation, minimum 4-spray outlet of head to reduce friction generated heat
· Anti-retraction valve of corresponding handpiece coupler to prevent backflow of fluids and debris generated during dental procedures.
· Resistant system for pulling aerosol into turbine head of handpiece
· Meets all hospital infection control requirements.
· Thermo washer disinfectable and sterilizable
· Long service life of equipment with comprehensive warranty for repair/damage under more than average use.
(C) Essential physical characteristics; Dimensions
· Non-slip grip profile
· Highly scratch resistant surface
·Light weight of high-speed handpiece – less than 35 gram
· Small head size of high-speed handpiece – less than 10.5 mm for hard-to-reach areas/limited opening
· Head height of high-speed handpiece less than 17.2 mm height (with 16 mm bur) for difficult access to patients with limited opening.
· Max length 21 mm of high-speed handpiece
· Push button chuck system
· Ceramic ball bearings to reduce vibration and reduce noise, critical for treating patients with
PTSD.
· Low profile coupler to prevent from dislodging connector from unit, no greater than 35 mm height from coupler orifice of dental chair
