About this file
This document is a guidance guide issued by the State of Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) providing instructions for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients regarding driver's license and REAL ID applications and renewals. The guide addresses the relationship between Employment Authorization Document (EAD) status and driver's license eligibility within Illinois.
The guide outlines the process and associated fees for obtaining and maintaining driver's licenses as EAD status changes. A standard Illinois driver's license costs $30 and does not require an unexpired EAD or Social Security Number, while a REAL ID correction fee is $5. When an EAD expires before renewal, DACA recipients may convert to a standard driver's license (valid for 4 years) marked "Federal Limits Apply" and may later convert back to a REAL ID once the renewed EAD is received. For air travel without a REAL ID, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) charges a $45 identity verification fee through its Confirm ID process. The guide specifies required documentation for each transaction, notes that many Illinois DMV facilities—particularly in Chicago and suburban areas—require advance appointments, and provides step-by-step procedures for managing license status transitions relative to EAD renewal cycles.
