Purpose: The purpose of the U. S. Army Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) Program is to produce active duty occupational therapists for the United States Uniformed Services. Uniformed Service occupational therapists are generalist practitioners who may be assigned across the continuum of care in a variety of practice settings. Occupational Therapists prescribe therapeutic occupations, including everyday life activities to support service members’ performance and function in the multiple life roles they engage in; home, school, work, and community environments.

Occupational therapy students are trained to addresses physical, cognitive, psychosocial, sensory-perceptual, and other aspects of performance. Occupational therapy students use interventions designed to develop skills, prevent illness and promote health and wellness. Interventions are used to also rehabilitate an illness, injury or disease which results in impairment, disability, activity limitation, or a restriction in a person's ability to participation in their daily occupations.

The program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and problem solving abilities, duties, responsibilities, and ethics to deliver quality occupational therapy services and provides those concepts, principles, methods, and role models which will stimulate the continuous personal and professional growth of these occupational therapy officers.

Students are commissioned officers in the Army Medical Specialist Corps (SP).

Phase Scope: This course is a two-phased, degree-producing program.

Phase 1, which is 78 weeks and 3 days in length, consists of a comprehensive study of coursework in anatomy, neuroanatomy, kinesiology and clinical conditions to support the students' understanding of human engagement and the impact of function and dysfunction on human occupation. Students are introduced to occupational science concepts and learn to view the human developmental continuum through an occupational lens. Finally, students are introduced to key professional skills including group and interpersonal dynamics, activity analysis, professional information literacy and occupational performance evaluation. The program provides a working knowledge of the evaluation and treatment techniques of the occupational therapist outlined according to the occupational therapy scope of practice. The program provides the study of concepts, methods, and principles to stimulate personal growth and development.

Phase 2, is 58 weeks in length and consists of two distinct clinical fieldwork experiences and an individualized research capstone experience. The doctoral experiential component provides opportunities for students to apply the academic knowledge, skills and behaviors at an advanced practitioner level.

Students who successfully complete the program will be granted an entry level Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) degree.
