Rachel Soh, EIT Assistant Engineer
Rachel is Hazen’s assistant engineer with a year of water and wastewater treatment and design experience. Her experiences include water treatment modeling and planning, including field testing and lab testing. Wastewater experience includes operator training and modeling.
Kyrene Water Reclamation Facility, Tempe, AZ The Kyrene Water Reclamation ceased operations in 2010, as the demand for treating wastewater increased and the need to reduce reliance on existing stressed supplies, the City of Tempe decided on recommission-ing the facility. The facility aimed to treat up to 4.5 MGD of wastewater locally and focused on modernizing their current MBR system to increase treatment efficiency. Rachel aided in the 90 percent design of the MBR design and other aspects of the projects.
Experience Prior to Hazen LCRR Coupon Testing, Phoenix, AZ In December 2021, the Lead and Copper Rule Revision (LCRR) lead to the city of phoenix to take action in determining if changes needed to be made to the city’s piping system. The coupon test was conducted to com-pare metal release for pipes exposed to CAP versus SRP water with or without pH adjustment. The testing program exposed harvested copper and brass pipe/coupon samples to be CAP and SRP waters, where the free chlorine levels of those waters were adjusted to a target residual. After two to three days of exposure, the water is collected into a composite sample. This step is repeated, and the final composite sample sent to the lab for analysis. Rachel aided in the testing and data analysis of the cou-pon testing. The coupon test allowed for the city to further access and mitigate the risk of increased lead concentrations.
Southeast Water Reclamation Facility, Mesa, AZ The Southeast Water Reclamation Facility has the capacity to treat up to 8 MG of wastewater per day. It is scalping plant where treated effluent are sent to the Greenfield WRF for further treatment and the partial flow is sent to the Gila River Indian Community for beneficial reuse as a part of the exchange agreement for surface water. Rachel was trained in the day-to-day responsibilities as an operator in maintaining the facility operates efficiently. Some responsibilities include equipment maintenance, Rachel Soh, EIT monitoring process controls, analyzing daily trends and data, daily lab analysis and others. Rachel earned her Grad II Wastewater Certificate shortly after interning with the facility.
