Project Description

Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park – Beach Nourishment

Contract Number CN328, Task Assignment Number 2

Subtask 1 – Topography & Beach Profiles

Description: Coastal Systems will mobilize a survey team to collect survey data within the beach area outlined on Figure 1 to document beach topography to the approximate Mean Low Water Line.

Horizontal positioning will be based on differential GPS with accuracies suitable for a study of this nature. The beach topography will be collected using RTK with profiles collected every 50 feet. Mean

High Water and Mean Low Water will be identified.

Field data will be reduced to the horizontal coordinate system acceptable to the Client and a vertical datum established for this project. Contours will reflect elevations at 1-foot intervals. The base map can be represented upon a geo-referenced and ortho-rectified color aerial image.

Coastal Systems will collect up to thirty (30) total sand samples from the beach, along each transect, to be analyzed under standard regulatory agency requirements. The samples will be visually compared with existing sand quality product data from the Ortona sand mine for the fill material to confirm conformance with environmental criteria for beach quality sand. Geotechnical testing for grain size and Munsell color is not included within these services.

Figure 1. Outline of area of focus for field studies.

Deliverable: A digital survey file will be emailed to the Bureau of Design and Construction (BDC).

Performance Measure: Deliverables will be reviewed by the Department to confirm they are complete, and accurate.

Subtask 1 Within 30 days of the Contract execution date.

Subtask 2: Coastal Modeling

Description: Coastal Systems will review the available coastal report/studies and as well as historical data i.e. storm (that passed within the Project vicinity), wind and wave data. However, the incident unidirectional wind generated sea and swell waves play important role in morphological changes.

Therefore, the detailed analysis of long period (historical) wind and wave data will be critical in assessing the rate of erosion in the project vicinity.

In this study, a combination of MIKE by DHI’s tools, i.e. MIKE21-SW (Spectral Wave), MIKE-HD

(Hydrodynamic) and MIKE21-ST (Sand Transport), will be utilized in coupled mode to evaluate the existing condition. The data collected under Subtask 1 will be used to calibrate the models. One (1) teleconference call with the Client to review the findings of the Coastal Engineering Report is included.

Deliverable: A digital copy of the Coastal Engineering Report will be emailed to the BDC

Performance Measure: Deliverables will be reviewed by the Department to confirm they are complete, and accurate.
