About this file

This is a product specification document for cast aluminum safety treads and nosings required for the School Street Staircase Renovation project in California, located on North Pacific Avenue between 2017 and 2027 North Pacific Avenue. The project scope includes repair and sealing of concrete stairs, installation of cast aluminum stair nosings, and grout and tile work. The specification document details Alumogrit Type 101 safety treads and nosings manufactured by Wooster Products Inc., which are designed for both interior and exterior stair applications. The products feature anti-slip abrasive surfaces, corrosion resistance, and durability suitable for rough use environments. Standard specifications include 5/16-inch thickness, widths of 3, 4, and 6 inches, and maximum single-piece lengths of 8 feet 6 inches, with longer lengths fabricated in equal sections. The abrasive material consists of #20 virgin grain aluminum oxide integrally cast to a minimum depth of 1/32 inch.

The specification requires cast metals to conform to Alumogrit composition standards using No. 43 secondary ingot with low copper content for corrosion resistance. Fastening options include wing anchors, nuts and bolts, concealed integral anchors, screws with expansion shields, Tapcon screws, and wood screws, with concealed anchors specified as slotted rivet type integrally cast to a minimum of 3/8 inch depth. Additional requirements include shot blasted finishing, machine-made holes or countersinks, recessed screw heads, and cross-hatching or fluting at 1/16-inch minimum depth. Installation guidelines specify that nosings be placed during or immediately after concrete pouring, with safety nosings terminating not more than 4 inches from step ends for poured concrete stairs. The contractor must allow 24 hours before permitting stairway use following concrete placement and installation.

GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTALLATION OF METAL SAFETY TREADS OR NOSINGS INTO NEW CONCRETE OR

STEEL PAN FILLED STAIRS:

The use of very large aggregate in the concrete mix may make placement of the safety nosing difficult.

Safety nosing placement may be difficult in concrete with very low slump.

Place concrete into the stair forms or steel pans as quickly as possible; schedule pour so as to install the metal safety nosings quickly before the initial set of concrete occurs.

Puddle the concrete, tamp the safety nosings to insure proper concrete formation around the anchors.

Remove protective tape (if used) as soon as practical.

Order nosings or treads well in advance of the pour or installation date.

Close stairway after pour; permit no use for 24 hours.
