About this file
This is an appendix document from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) detailing specifications for Classification AI cameras utilized in the Traffic Data Services WIM/CCS contract opportunity. SCDOT employs Rekor AI cameras specifically designed for collecting vehicle classification, volume, and speed data in compliance with Federal Highway Administration traffic data reporting requirements. These cameras serve as a cost-effective alternative to permanent roadway sensor installations, providing high-quality traffic data collection without the need for intrusive infrastructure modifications.
The document establishes key operational and privacy parameters for camera deployment. Cameras do not collect speeding information for law enforcement purposes and are not used for traffic citations or moving violation enforcement. Vehicle tags are not identified or stored, and images are retained only for a limited subset of vehicles designated for data validation purposes on the vendor's secure server, with no sharing or selling of images to third-party entities. Site selection is based on specific conditions including failing asphalt, queued traffic, or locations unsuitable for traditional roadway sensor installation. Each camera cabinet is marked with reflective decals displaying the SCDOT CCS site designation, site number, and vendor contact information to ensure visibility for maintenance and support operations while maintaining data privacy and security.
