About this file

This is a Bid Notice from the City of Boise Public Works Department for the procurement of specialized High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) materials for geothermal system infrastructure replacement. The City of Boise operates the largest geothermal heating district in the country, providing direct-use heat to approximately 90 downtown buildings comprising over 6 million square feet through a two-pipe, direct bury, closed loop system. This bid (SFB2026-091) is intended to purchase PlatinumStripe 1800 Series PE-RT High Temperature, DR-11 HDPE pipe and fittings or equivalent materials for replacing geothermal mainlines on 1st Street between Jefferson and State Street. The geothermal system operates with supply water at 177°F pumped at pressures of 50-70 psi and return water at 90-170°F at 30-40 psi. Pipe sizes range from 1" to 20" in diameter, with supply lines typically insulated and collection lines uninsulated. All hardware shall be stainless steel 316, all gaskets shall be full-face EPDM, and insulated pipe shall be Polycor Platinum by Thermacore or approved equivalent.

The PlatinumStripe 1800 PE-RT pipe specified complies with ASTM standards (D3350, D2837, F2619, F714, D3261, D2513, F2206) and API 15 LE standards, with a hydrostatic design basis of 800 psi at 180°F. The pipe maintains continuous operating capability from -49°F to 180°F and allows intermittent operation up to 203°F. At 180°F operating temperature, the DR-11 rated pipe provides 100 psi design pressure for water and brine applications, with design pressures decreasing across temperature ranges and dimensional ratios. The pipe is identified by four platinum color stripes and offers superior stress crack resistance, approximately 20 times greater than standard PE4710 products. The pipe follows standard PE4710 fusion parameters and allows native backfill material installation for shallow, non-traffic applications.

Geothermal HDPE Materials (GEO1006)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND INFORMATION

The City of Boise Public Works Department oversees the operation of a geothermal heating district that provides direct-use heat to buildings of downtown Boise, Idaho. This is the largest geothermal system in the country heating approximately 90 buildings equating to over 6 million square feet. Geothermal water is primarily used for building heat, but is also used year-round for water heating, pool heating, laundry facility heating and other similar uses.

The geothermal system is a two-pipe, direct bury, closed loop system. 177˚F supply water is pumped from the geothermal aquifer to buildings downtown at pressures ranging from 50-70 psi. After buildings remove heat from the water, the water is collected and piped to an injection well at temperatures ranging between 90˚F to 170˚F at pressures at 30-40 psi.

The geothermal system is comprised of Transite Pipe, Fiberglass, PEX, Steel, Polyethylene, and HDPE. Pipe sizes range from 1” to 20”. Supply-lines are typically insulated, and collection lines are not insulated.

This bid is intended to purchase materials and supplies to replace the geothermal mainlines in 1st Street, generally between Jefferson and State Street. This bid is for the procurement of PlatinumStripe 1800 Series PE-RT High Temperature, DR-11, HDPE pipe and fittings (or equivalent). Product specification sheet can be found at the following link:

https://www.cpchem.com/what-we-do/solutions/performance-pipe/products/pe-rt/platinumstriper-1800-series-pe-rt-pipe.

All hardware shall be comprised of Stainless Steel 316.

• All Gaskets shall be Full Face EPDM.

• All Hardware shall consist of 316SS Flange Kits (nuts and bolts).

Insulated pipe shall be Polycor Platinum by Thermacore, or approved equivalent.
