BEP SPECIFICATION

FOR

PAPER: TYPE I NON-DISTINCTIVE BANKNOTE

1.0 SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION

1.1 Scope. This specification establishes acceptance and performance requirements for Type I non-distinctive banknote paper. The paper shall be suitable for use in the evaluation of materials and equipment used at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, hereinafter referred to as the “BEP.”

1.2 Classification. This specification covers one type and four sizes of paper in sheet form. Table I lists the BEP stock item numbers for the Type I non-distinctive banknote paper for each sheet size.

Note: The BEP may require sheet dimensions other than that which are listed in Table I. In such case, the BEP will provide the sheet dimensions and the stock item number in the purchase order.

3.1.1 Composition. The cellulose component of the paper shall be composed from cotton and linen fibers, with the linen content controlled at 25 ± 5% by mass.

3.6 Physical Requirements. The paper shall conform to the requirements in Table II.

3.6.2 Thickness (Caliper). The thickness of the paper shall be 124 ± 7 micrometers.

3.6.20 Grain Direction. The grain direction of the sheet is in the short dimension of the sheet.

5.2 Packaging and Packing. The paper shall be evenly jogged and stacked on skids such that the felt side of the paper is facing up. A skid shall not contain more than 10,000 sheets.

The paper shall be packed and packaged in accordance with best commercial practice to protect the paper from moisture, give adequate protection against damage in transit and handling, and prevent any change to the sheets (e.g., deformation of the sheet) that could affect the printing and processing of the sheets. The Contractor’s packaging and packing of the paper shall be based on the sheet size and quantity specified in the purchase order and shall be approved by the BEP prior to shipment of paper to BEP facilities.

5.2.3 Skids. The 32-subject size paper and 50-subject size shall be supplied on skids constructed of wood and designed such that the skid runners are aligned parallel to the grain direction of the sheets.

The smaller size paper (Item Number 2NDB7001) shall be supplied on skids constructed of wood that allow two-way entry by pallet jacks and forklift trucks. The skids for the smaller size paper shall be designed such that the skid runners are aligned parallel to the grain direction of the sheets.
