PROJECT TITLE: Footbridge Repairs
PROJECT NARRATIVE:
Beall Woods State Park is located on the banks of the Wabash River in southeastern Illinois. The Park attracts visitors from around the world who are interested in experiencing one of the few remaining tracts of virgin timber east of the Mississippi River. While walking through the timber via the hiking trails, visitors can see trees 120 feet tall and more than 3 feet in diameter.
There are many hiking trails located within the park; however, Tuliptree Trail is the most popular and widely used. Due to a heavy thunderstorm this past October, wind gusts reaching near 50 mph blew down a large tree landing on the 2nd of three (3) footbridges located on this trail. The impact of the fallen tree caused moderate damage to the south end of the bridge near the abutment; hence, the reason for this project.
The damaged footbridge is one (1) of the three (3) bridges located on Tuliptree Trail, specifically located at following geographic coordinates: 38.358, -87.824. The bridges were constructed/installed in August of 2007. The bridge was built by Anderson Bridges, LLC. of Colfax, WI. The bridge is a single span steel structure, resting on concrete footings with concrete back walls, the decking is pressure treated wood, with a wooden handrail. The structure measures 46’-8” long, approximately 6 feet wide, and has a 6,000 lb. vehicle load limit.
SCOPE OF WORK:
This project will consist of the Contractor providing all labor, equipment and materials required to make the appropriate repairs to the damaged steel footbridge. The Contractor’s work will include the following items, but not exclusive to:
· Remove the fallen tree from the steel footbridge structure.
· Construct a cribbing system under the south end of the bridge to support the structure during rehab/construction.
· The Contractor is not allowed to disturb or unbolt the west top and bottom chords, this will help keep the bridge in tack and self-supporting during the construction period.
· Once the bridge is safely supported, the Contractor will be required to remove all damaged/bent members of the structure, replacing them with like members. Some of the items that will need to be replaced consists of the following, but not exclusive to:
· East End Vertical, 3” X 3” Sch. 80 Square Tubing
· East Top Chord, 3” x 3” Sch. 80 Square Tubing
· Vertical Railing (12 ea.), 1” x 1” x ¼” Angle Iron
· Cap for Vertical Railing, 1 ¼” x 1 ¼” x ¼” Angle Iron
· Side Brace, 2” x 2” x ¼” Angle Iron
· It appears the south floor beam could be bent/skewed. However, it may be in a bind due to the continual stress applied on the structure from the fallen tree. This will be evaluated once the pressure is alleviated from the structure by the fallen tree. If the floor beam is to be replaced, the following specifications shall be used:
· W8 x 15 Floor Beam, 6’-3” in length
