INSTALL ALLUVIAL FAN TRAIL TREAD MATERIAL
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This work consists of the installation of 12,000 sq. ft. of Filterpave Porous Pavement System (FPPS) materials on the Alluvial Fan accessible trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. The project will initiate in mid-September 2020. Installation must occur within 5 days of the delivery of the Government furnished Filterpave Tread Material and Epoxy (date of delivery to be determined). FPPS materials will be offloaded and in the Alluvial Fan parking area prior to Contractor arrival.
Trail alignment, subgrade, and native rock edging will be constructed by ROMO Trail Crew prior to FPPS installation. The work of this contract is the application of government furnished FPPS material to manufacturer specifications.
See provided Final Design Drawings which show the extent of the work to be completed. The Contractor will begin installation on the west side of the Alluvial Fan Trail, then complete the section of trail that connects from the bridge crossing over the Roaring River to the visitor overlook. The final project phase consists of installation of tread material on East side of the trail, from the bridge crossing to the east parking area.
Both the trail and parking areas will be closed to park visitors during construction. The contractor will be allowed to stage equipment, tools and vehicles in the parking lots while completing the work.
The Government will provide an extendable boom forklift and operator for up to 10 hours a day to assist with transportation of Government furnished materials throughout the project site.
The Government will provide gas powered wheelbarrows, wheelbarrows and skid steers, and up to five additional operators to move material from the mixer to the installation site.
Contractor will coordinate with the park’s Trails Office prior to arrival: jesse_miller@nps.gov, 970-586-1248
LOCATION:
Rocky Mountain National Park 1000 Hwy 36 Estes Park, CO 80517-8397
GOVERNMENT FURNISHED PROPERTY:
A. 2,000 linear ft. 2x4 Lumber Form Materials B. 12,000 sq. ft of FilterPave Tread Material and Dual Component Polyurethane Binder mailto:jesse_miller@nps.gov
C. The Government will provide a 5 yard dumpster for material waste. The government will be responsible for emptying and cleaning of the dumpster.
D. Contractor is responsible for protecting Government-furnished items from damage during storage and handling, including damage from exposure to the elements.
E. If Government-furnished items are damaged as a result of Contractor's operations, Contractor shall repair or replace them.
EXAMINATION OF SITE:
A. Pre-Installation Meeting: Prior to installation of any materials, Contractor will conduct a pre-installation meeting to discuss the scope of the work and review installation requirements. The pre-installation meeting shall be attended by all parties involved in the installation of the FilterPave Pourous Pavement System (FPPS).
B. Verify site conditions are as indicated on the drawings. Notify the Contracting Officer if site conditions are not acceptable. Do not begin preparation or installation until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.
C. Verify layout of FPPS is as indicated on the drawings. Notify the Contracting Officer if layout is not acceptable. Do not begin preparation or installation until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.
D. Park staff will notify Contractor of scheduled material delivery two weeks prior to delivery date. Contractor shall be onsite within 48 hours of material delivery in mid-September to reduce material exposure time to inclement weather conditions.
INSTALLATION:
A. Mock-Up
1. A 10 square foot mock-up must be coordinated, completed, and approved by Contracting Officer prior to beginning tread installation.
2. The mock-up may be incorporated in the final installation of tread material.
B. Formwork
1. All required form materials shall be provided onsite by the Government.
2. Forms will be 2x4 lumber materials.
3. Contractor shall set forms the full depth of the pavement.
4. Forms shall be set by the Contractor to provided sufficient strength and stability to support mechanical screeding equipment without deformation following spreading and strike-off operations.
5. A non-petroleum based, 100% biodegradable vegetable oil shall be applied to forms, tools and any equipment that will come into contact with the elastomeric binder. Under no circumstances should a petroleum-based form release agent be used.
6. Forms shall not have stakes or spikes protruding above the top of the forms to assure even screeding of the poured material. Spikes or stakes supplied by Contractor.
7. Forms shall be set level in order to ensure there is no cross slope greater than 5 percent.
Contractor shall ensure forms are level with each other with a method approved by the Contracting Officer.
C. Mixing
1. Mixing shall be with volumetric mixers specifically designed for producing FPPS.
2. All mixing shall be on-site to reduce waste and impact to adjacent roadways.
3. The volumetric mixer shall operate at 300 RPM minimum and shall instantaneously produce and discharge into the conveyance equipment and/or directly to the forms to maintain maximum working time.
4. The volumetric mixer and mixer components shall be kept dry until the binder can be introduced.
5. Calibration of the binding agent content shall be completed upon the mixer and the percentage will be in conformance with the manufacturer’s design formulation.
D. Placement
1. Discharge shall be a continuous operation and shall be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
2. Material shall be discharged into conveyance equipment as close to its final position as practical to ensure that fresh mix enters the mass of previously placed material.
3. In the event of material shortage or mechanical delays in mixing, a construction joint equivalent to project forms will be utilized.
4. Material shall be discharged and set in accordance with FPPS specifications for a pedestrian area.
E. Finishing
1. Strike off shall be performed using vibratory power-screed or vibrastrike type device as dictated by project parameters. Extreme care should be taken to strike off the material as flat and uniformly as possible.
2. Filling and cutting imperfections can be completed with fresno or other hand trowels immediately after strike off. Any apparent low spots must be filled immediately (<5 minutes) after strike off and floated in using hand or mechanical trowels.
3. Finishing shall be accomplished with fresno and hand trowels within 10 minutes of screeding.
4. Edging: Native rock materials as indicated on the drawings. Commence edge treatment immediately after final finish with conventional concrete edging tools. Immediately (<5 minutes) fill low spots along the edge created by strike off operations. After forms are pulled contractor will fill gaps between main pour and rock edging taking care to be as level as possible. Gaps between rocks will be filled with FPPS.
5. If required, spacing of and determination between tooled edge construction joints or mechanically cut in compression joints to be determined by manufacturer specifications.
F. Curing
1. Unless otherwise approved by project Contracting Officer, a minimum of 48 hours shall be allowed for curing prior to equipment and pedestrian traffic, if ambient temperature does not fall below 60° F (15.5° C) for 72 hours following the pour, five days (120 hours) if ambient temperatures do fall below 60° F.
2. During the curing period, protect the FPPS installation from damaging mechanical disturbances, water flow, loading, shock and vibration.
3. Contractor shall ensure FPPS stays at proper temperatures overnight for curing (Reference temperatures in Curing paragraph G.1, above.)
PAVING RESTRICTIONS
FPPS shall not be installed when the following conditions exist:
1. Unstable or frozen base.
2. During rain or snow.
3. When air temperature is less than 45°F or more than 95°F.
