SPECIFICATION
FOR
KEVLAR WADING TAGLINE CABLE
1. SCOPE
1.1 This specification contains the requirements for the manufacture of
Kevlar wading tagline cable used by the U.S. Geological Survey to measure river widths.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
2.1 HIF Specifications
HIF-W-01C: Workmanship
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General
The contractor shall select all unspecified parts, materials, and processes so that they will be entirely suitable for the intended purpose.
3.2 Outside Diameter
The outside diameter of the completed tagline shall be
0.060 005.
010.
+ inch [1.52
13.0 25.0
+ mm] when tested as described in section 4.2.1.
3.3 Core Construction
The core shall be a 6 part braid comprised wholly of Kevlar 49. It shall consist of one 1420 denier Kevlar 49 fiber per carrier and braided at
4.8 picks per inch (PPI) ±0.5 PPI [189 picks per meter (PPM) ±20
PPM].
3.4 Jacket
3.4.1 The jacket shall be of smoothly braided nylon-6. The jacket shall be made in a 16 part twill braid and shall provide a full and tight coverage over the Kevlar rope core. The tagline shall employ 1 yarn of 420-denier nylon per carrier and braided at 37 picks per inch (PPI) ±5 PPI, [1457 picks per meter ±197 PPM]
3.4.2 Yarn shall be pre-dyed before braiding to produce a bright yellow color.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE
4.1 Pre-production Sample Tests
A pre-production sample shall be manufactured using the same procedures and processes and at the same location as proposed for full production. This sample will be tested, as specified in section 4.2, by the Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) for the purposes of determining compliance with the requirements of this specification.
The length of the pre-production sample shall be determined at the time of contract award but shall not exceed 500 feet for the English measured taglines and 150 meters for the metric taglines.
4.2 Acceptance Tests
4.2.1 Outside Diameter
The cable shall be tensioned to 25 ±5 pounds [11.3 ±2.2 Kg].
The cable diameter shall be measured with a NIST traceable calibrated caliper having a resolution of .001 inches or smaller.
Three or more readings around the cable may be taken and averaged to allow for slight ovality in the cable.
4.2.2 Average Break Strength
A minimum of six tension-test samples shall be taken from the pre-production sample furnished by the manufacturer, with at least three samples taken from near each end of the pre-production sample. The test samples shall be tested one at a time with a NIST traceable calibrated tensile tester. The samples can be tested by placing on 3.75 to 4 inch [95 to 102 mm] drum grips and pulled to destruction. They can alternately be terminated by employing Nicopress sleeves and pulled to destruction. The minimum gage length (length to be tested under tension) shall be 12 inches [305 mm] between the drum grips, or alternately, between the Nicropress sleeves. The pull rate is 5 inches per minute ±0.5 inches per minute [127 mm per minute ±12.7 mm per minute]. The average of the total amount of tension required to rupture the samples shall not be less than 300 pounds [136 kg] when dry.
4.2.3 Minimum Break Strength
The test sample shall be attached to a Tensile Tester set to a 270 pound [122 kg] pull. Each cable shall be stressed for 2 minutes ±10 seconds. To pass this test, none of the samples shall fail.
4.2.4 Kinking and Knuckling
The tagline shall not exhibit kinking or knuckling after bending the sample around a ¼ inch [6.35 mm] mandrel and returning to the straight position. The sample shall not have any of the rope strength core exposed through the yellow nylon braid after the bending procedure.
