About this file

This document is a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) specification for electrical and electronic soldering standards. The specification modifies the ANSI/J-STD-001 standard with several key amendments: it removes military references, specifies Sn63 solder composition as default unless otherwise directed, and changes requirements around exposed basis metal after component lead cutting. The document defines soldering requirements for the USGS Water Resources Division's Hydrologic Instrumentation Program, with particular emphasis on classifying products as Class 3 and establishing precise soldering quality control standards for hydrologic instrumentation equipment.
