Structural Narrative

Introduction

This project is located on the IHS Whiteriver Campus in Whiteriver, Arizona. This work includes the installation of a new back-up generator providing redundancy for the hospital’s existing generator.

Architectural, structural, plumbing and electrical services are required for this project.

Scope of Work

The structural scope requires the design of a cast-in-place concrete mechanical equipment pad and adjacent ribbon slab for service and maintenance.

Design Criteria

All aspects of the design shall be in full compliance with IHS design criteria and the latest building codes.

The following codes and design criteria shall be utilized to the extent applicable:

2018 International Building Code (IBC 2018)

2016 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures - American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE 7-16)

(ACI 318-19)

2016 Steel Construction Manual, 15th Edition – American Institute of Steel Construction (ANSI/AISC 360-16 15th Ed.)

2019 IHS Architect/Engineer Design Guide.

Consult the White Mountain Apache Tribe and local utilities for any local jurisdictional codes and standards that must be followed.

Structural Design

The new generator is located on the ground level and is to be supported by a new 4000 psi concrete foundation slab or also known as an equipment housekeeping pad. The cast-in-place concrete pad will be reinforced with a top and bottom reinforcing mat with reinforcing running both longitudinally and laterally. The generator will be anchored to the housekeeping pads with a Hilti post-installed anchoring system that will satisfy the manufactures specifications and all seismic restraint requirements. Furthermore, the generator will have to be located at a determined distance away from an adjacent retaining wall as not to surcharge the wall with the generator.

Electrical Narrative

Introduction

This narrative discusses the Backup Generator Installation Design for the IHS White River Campus.

General Design Guidelines

The following guidelines shall establish the basic standards of construction for the work associated with this project.

All work described herein shall conform to the National Electric Code (NEC) – NFPA 70, The International Building Code, The Health Care Facilities Code, NFPA 99, The Life Safety Code, NFPA 101, The International Energy Conservation Code & applicable campus standards.

Project Scope

The hospital campus is currently served by a single 932KW backup generator in an N configuration. The purpose of this project is to utilize an existing generator from the Hopi Health Care Center to provide to provide N+1 backup capabilities to serve the entire campus.

The electrical portion of this work shall include, but not be limited to the following:

Utilize an existing 1000KW, 480Y/277V, 3PH, 4W Kholer generator from the Hopi Health Care Center. The generator will tie into the existing fuel system.

The generator will be located outside to the north of the existing plant.

The project will provide (1) generator emergency switchboard located outside on the north wall of the power plant.

The new emergency switchboard will be provided with two input breakers and two output breakers. The input breakers will be provided with kirk keys for manual operation and selection of generator. The output breakers will re-feed existing automatic transfer switches NED and existing emergency distribution board EPD from new emergency switchboard.

All other distribution will remain as is.

The electrical portion of this work shall include, but not be limited to the following:

Furthermore, the following shall apply to the areas in scope:

Electrical Service and Distribution:

All existing electrical service and distribution are to remain “as-is” unless noted otherwise.

Additions or modification to any panel or service will be documented.

Existing egress or emergency lighting will be reconnected or modified as needed.

Branch Wiring:

IHS White River – Hospital Backup Generator Install Electrical Narrative

Design Criteria

All aspects of the design shall be in full compliance with IHS design criteria. The following codes and design criteria shall be utilized to the extent applicable:

International Building Code (IBC)

International Plumbing Code

NFPA 101 Life Safety Code

NFPA 110 Emergency Power

NFPA National Fire Codes with the exception of NFPA 5000 and NFPA 900

Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards.

National Electrical Code (NEC)

International Plumbing Code (IPC)

Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, American Society of Mechanical Engineers

(ASME) A 17.1.

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

ASME Code for Pressure Piping

Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete, American Concrete Institute and Commentary (ACI 318)

Manual of Steel Construction, Load and Resistance Factor Design Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)

Existing Conditions

The existing building was surveyed assessed during the initial kickoff. Notes and pictures from the surveys are provided below.

Outdoor fuel tanks (10,000 gallon) and transfer pump shall remain.

Existing fuel day tanks serve the boilers and are to remain. The fuel pumps are replaced in the boiler contract.

IHS White River – Hospital Backup Generator Install Mechanical Narrative

AESUS Design Group M - 2

Fuel Storage Requirements

Currently there are (2) 10,000 gallon diesel storage tanks on site. The fuel is recirculated by (2) 1/2 HP pumps located withing the boiler room. Fuel is transferred to 1) 100 gallon day tank at the boilers and 2) the day tank at the emergency power generator.

The primary and only source of fuel is from diesel storage tanks located in the yard. There is no backup fuel source.

The day tank and fuel circulation pumps are replaced as part of the boiler replacement project. If this project is not completed, the size of the existing fuel pumps shall be reviewed.

Per NFPA 110, a minimum of 96 hours of fuel is required to maintain for emergency use.

o New water boilers are redundant, each requires 28.9 gal/hr.

o The existing generator (and new generator project, redundant) are 1000 KW, which requires 71.2 gal/hr.

o At full rate, 100.1 gal/hr will be required over the 96 hours = 9,610 gallons.

o The (2) 10,000 gallon tanks have sufficient capacity. Accordingly, to maintain the 96 hour requirement we suggest that the (2) tanks never be pulled below 55% available.

Alternately, that one tank be kept full and other be left with 10% available.
