About this file

This document is a State of California Bid Specification for Wood Posts, Signs and Markers, issued by the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) through the Department of General Services (DGS) on 07/14/2022. The specification covers four primary categories of wood products: wood guardrail posts and blocks for metal beam barriers, wood posts for roadside signs, wooden survey stakes, and thrie beam crash barriers. The document references multiple industry standards including the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Wood Protection Association (AWPA), Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau Standard, and follows the 2018 Caltrans Standard Specification with a revised specification dated 4-15-22.

The bid specification provides detailed technical requirements for wood post products, including precise dimensional specifications, treatment standards, bundling and packaging instructions, and quality assurance protocols. The document outlines specific stock numbers for various wood post types, with detailed requirements for moisture content, wood grain, knots, surface finish, and permissible defects. Delivery specifications include requirements for fixation periods, moisture content, bundling methods, and pallet construction, with strict inspection criteria that allow for rejection of loads that do not meet the specified standards. The specification is intended for statewide use by the California Department of Transportation, with comprehensive guidelines for suppliers to ensure consistent quality and performance of wood posts and markers used in transportation infrastructure.
