About this file

This document is a State of California Bid Specification for Long Term Fire Retardant, specifically identified by the code 6850-5467, developed for Cal Fire (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection). The specification references and aligns with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service standards, specifically Specification 5100-304D for Long Term Retardant, Wildland Firefighting, dated January 7, 2020.

The specification outlines requirements for a fire retardant product designed for wildland fire management, which must be mixed with water and applied to slow fire spread, reduce fire intensity, and potentially extinguish fires. The product must be fully qualified and listed on the USDA Wildland Fire Chemical System (WFCS) Qualified Products List, with no interim qualified products accepted. Key performance requirements include meeting specific criteria for product formulation, mix ratio, combustion-retarding effectiveness, physical properties, materials effects, pumpability, product stability, and color properties. The retardant will be subject to sample testing through the WFCS Lot Acceptance and Quality Assurance Program, with the supplier required to collaborate on resolving any quality issues identified during testing.
