About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a federal contract opportunity to diagnose vibrations on the X-ray mirrors of the AMX (17-ID-1) and FMX (17-ID-2) beamlines at the NSLS-II facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The work includes four days of on-site support by a beamline engineer or scientist to analyze and plot the vibration spectrum up to 1 kHz for the mirror systems, using at minimum the encoders measuring pitch motions. BNL may also provide capacitive sensors and beam position monitors. The contractor shall summarize the findings in a "Summary of Findings" document and provide suggestions and a quote for potential design improvements or upgrades to mitigate the vibration effects. Travel expenses are to be included in the offer. BNL will provide technical and controls support during the site visit. The related federal contract opportunity, solicitation number PB449158, is for this NSLS-II AMX/FMX Mirror Vibration Diagnosis work, with a bid due date of July 5, 2024. The contracting agency is the Department of Energy Office of Science.

Statement of Work (SOW) Martin Fuchs, FMX (17-ID-2) beamline, June 12, 2024

Intended work: Mirror service for the X-ray mirrors for the AMX (17-ID-1) and FMX (17-ID-2) beamlines at NSLS-II, BNL Building 740, Sector 17.

The work shall include four (4) working days of on-site support by a beamline engineer or scientist familiar with high-performance mirror systems.

The work is aimed to diagnose vibrations of the mirror systems. The vibrations shall be analyzed and plotted as a spectrum up to 1 kHz. The sensors evaluated shall at minimum include the encoders measuring the pitch motions of the mirrors. BNL will provide capacitive sensors and beam position monitors on a best effort basis; if these become available, their output shall be evaluated and correlated with the encoder readings.

The mirror systems shall be evaluated in the following order. This priority order may change:

1. AMX tandem deflecting mirrors (two (2) mirror systems)

2. AMX KB mirrors (two (2) mirror systems)

3. FMX HFM mirror (one (1) mirror system)

4. FMX KB mirrors (two (2) mirror systems)

The analysis shall be summarized in a “Summary of findings” document. This document shall list spectra for all mirror pitch motions.

Depending on the findings, the contractor shall provide suggestions and a quote for design improvements or upgrades to mitigate the effect of the vibrations. The implementation of such potential upgrades is not part of the scope. NSLS-II will then review the quoted design improvements or upgrades and may exercise the option to order this work.

Travel expenses are to be included in the offer.

NSLS-II will provide the following support during the visit:

- Technical support, particularly for venting, vessel liftings and work requiring more than one person

- Controls support and operating motion control systems to exercise the mirror motions

- Physical access to the mirror systems by opening the vacuum chambers
