G. Execution
1. General installation
a. Formwork: Design, construct, erect, shore, brace, and maintain formwork according to ACI 301.
b. Vapor Retarder: Install, protect, and repair vapor-retarder sheets according to ASTM E 1643; place sheets in position with longest dimension parallel with direction of pour.
i. Lap joints 6 inches (150 mm) and seal with manufacturer's recommended tape.

c. Steel Reinforcement: Comply with CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice" for fabricating, placing, and supporting reinforcement.
i. Do not cut or puncture vapor retarder. Repair damage and reseal vapor retarder before placing concrete.
d. Joints: Construct joints true to line with faces perpendicular to surface plane of concrete.
e. Construction Joints: Locate and install so as not to impair strength or appearance of concrete, at locations indicated or as approved by Architect.
f. Isolation Joints: Install joint-filler strips at junctions with slabs-on-grade and vertical surfaces, such as column pedestals, foundation walls, grade beams, and other locations, as indicated.
i. Extend joint fillers full width and depth of joint, terminating flush with finished concrete surface, unless otherwise indicated.
g. Contraction Joints in Slabs-on-Grade: Form weakened-plane contraction joints, sectioning concrete into areas as indicated. Construct contraction joints for a depth equal to at least one-fourth of the concrete thickness, as follows:
i. Grooved Joints: Form contraction joints after initial floating by grooving and finishing each edge of joint with groover tool to a radius of 1/8 inch (3 mm). Repeat grooving of contraction joints after applying surface finishes. Eliminate groover marks on concrete surfaces.
ii. Sawed Joints: Form contraction joints with power saws equipped with shatterproof abrasive or diamond-rimmed blades. Cut 1/8-inch- (3-mm-) wide joints into concrete when cutting action will not tear, abrade, or otherwise damage surface and before concrete develops random contraction cracks.
h. Tolerances: Comply with ACI 117, "Specifications for Tolerances for Concrete Construction and Materials."
2. Concrete Placement
a. Comply with recommendations in ACI 304R for measuring, mixing, transporting, and placing concrete.
b. Do not add water to concrete during delivery, at Project site, or during placement.
c. Consolidate concrete with mechanical vibrating equipment.
d. Cold Weather Placing:
i. Protect concrete work from physical damage or reduced strength which could be caused by frost, freezing actions, or low temperatures, in compliance with ACI 306 and as herein specified.
ii. When air temperature has fallen to or is expected to fall below 40 F (4 C), uniformly heat water and aggregates before mixing to obtain a concrete mixture temperature of not less 50 (10 C), and not more than 80 F (27 C) at point of placement.
iii. Do not use frozen materials or materials containing ice or snow. Do not place concrete on frozen subgrade or subgrade containing frozen materials.
iv. Do not use calcium chloride, salt or other materials containing antifreeze agents or chemical accelerators, unless otherwise accepted in mix designs.
e. Hot Weather Placing:
i. When hot weather conditions exist that would seriously impair quality and strength of concrete, place concrete in compliance with ACI 305 and as herein specified.
ii. Cool ingredients before mixing to maintain concrete temperature at time of placement below 90 F (32 C).
iii. Mixing water may be chilled, or chopped ice may be used to control temperature provided water equivalent of ice is calculated to total amount of mixing water.
3. Finishing Formed Surfaces
a. Rough-Formed Finish: As-cast concrete texture imparted by form-facing material with tie holes and defective areas repaired and patched, and fins and other projections exceeding 1/4 inch (6 mm) in height rubbed down or chipped off.
b. Apply to concrete surfaces not exposed to public view

f. Trowel and Fine-Broom Finish: Apply a partial trowel finish, stopping after second troweling, to surfaces indicated and to surfaces where ceramic or quarry tile is to be installed by either thickset or thin-set methods. Immediately after second troweling, and when concrete is still plastic, slightly scarify surface with a fine broom.
g. Nonslip Broom Finish: Apply a nonslip broom finish to surfaces indicated and to exterior concrete platforms, steps, and ramps. Immediately after float finishing, slightly roughen trafficked surface by brooming with fiber-bristle broom perpendicular to main traffic route.

A. Measurement and Payment
1. There shall be no separate payment for work required under this section. Payment is incidental to and included in the payment of other items of work. Included in toilet installation.
DIVISION 13 – SPECIALTIES
13800 – PRE-CAST CONCRETE VAULT TOILET INSTALLATION
A. General
1. This item shall consist of installation of (2) single unit concrete vault toilets, backfill for the toilets and completion of access pathways to the installed vault toilet including both crushed aggregate apron and concrete entrance pads.
B. Products:
1. Backfill - Structural Excavation, Backfill, and Compaction - Section 02222
2. Aggregate - Accessible Aggregate Pathways and Aprons - Section 02229
3. Cast-In-Place Concrete (for pad) – Section 03300
4. Pre-cast Unisex Concrete Vault Toilet – Missoula Concrete/CXT Aspen/Gunnison or approved equal. (Government Furnished.)
C. Execution
1. Prepare site, schedule delivery and placement of pre-cast concrete toilets to the installation site in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
2. Placement – The floor of the building and the top of the vaults should be the high spot of the site chosen. Finished floor elevation should be 4 – 6 inches above the natural grade measured at the front entrance of the floor. Both the floor and the top of the vault should be above the surrounding ground level with the pathway sloped up to meet the entryway. Ideally, the back of the building should be slightly higher to allow water to freely drain out of the toilet rooms.
3. Excavation, backfill and compaction – The hole shall be dug to accommodate the vaults. It must be large enough to be workable and to allow the floor of the building to fit on the vaults when placed, but small enough to avoid excessive backfill after placement. Compact the natural ground at the bottom of the vault excavation with a minimum of three passes with a whacker-type mechanical compactor or equal approved by the Contracting Officer.
4. Install level course of ¾” minus crushed aggregate so there will be no high spots in the middle of the vault bottom. The vault will be placed by the contractor who will be responsible to coordinate the delivering of the vault to assure that the hole is prepared according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Ideally, the containment area end of the vault should be slightly higher, ¼” per foot of run to allow the building to site higher. Ensure vault is level, side to side, and that it has a 0.5-1% grade front to back so liquid will drain toward the door for cleaning water to escape. Backfill around the structure. Use excavated material for backfill, rocks larger than 3-inches in maximum dimension shall not be placed within 6-inches of the exterior vault walls. Fill, adjacent to the building entry will have excavated material placed in 6-inch loose lifts and compacted with a minimum of three passes with a plate compactor, by vibration, or equivalent approved device by the Contracting Officer. All backfilling activities need to follow OSHA trench guidelines
5. When installation work is completed install aggregate apron around the building, construct concrete entrance pad as shown in the drawings, and aggregate access trail where needed according to the specifications.
