About this file

This Special Project Specification 412 document details technical requirements for calcium chloride pellets used as a dust palliative for road surfaces. The specification mandates specific chemical composition standards, including a minimum 94% calcium chloride (CaCl2) content, maximum 3% total alkali chlorides, and maximum 0.3% calcium hydroxide. Particle size requirements are precisely defined, with 100% passing a 3/8" screen, 80-100% passing a #4 screen, and 0-5% passing a #30 screen. The test method R1-412/Cl for verification is available from the USDA Forest Service Regional Materials Engineering Center in Missoula, Montana, with additional testing to be conducted using ASTM E 449 and AASHTO T 27 standards.
