About this file
This document outlines specifications and requirements for stainless steel screen and casings to be supplied to the Bureau of Reclamation Yuma Area Office. The Bureau of Reclamation requires 18 to 24-inch diameter mild steel casing pipe in 20-foot sections, as well as 10 and 20-foot sections of 16-inch diameter type 316L stainless steel rod-based, wire-wrapped well screen in various slot widths. The screen must be suitable for a maximum collapse depth of 600 feet and include 6-inch weld rings on both ends. Mild steel pipe must meet ASTM A53 grade B specifications and stainless steel screen must be fabricated from type 316L stainless steel per ASTM A493-09. Products will be delivered to the Yuma Area Office and must meet specifications for material composition, dimensions, and welding.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation seeking the steel pipe and well casing specified in the requirements document.

SPECIFICATIONS AND
STATEMENT OF WORK FOR
Stainless Steel Screen and
Casings
INTRODUCTION
The Yuma Area Office (YAO) within the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) currently operates four high-capacity production well systems in the Yuma area. The well fields have been established under various congressional acts to control groundwater levels and meet contractual obligations with various water districts for draining the Association Lands, provide return flows for delivery and water to Mexico to meet treaty obligations, and to provide return flow credits for the various water districts. In order to meet current and future commitments, new and replacement wells will be needed on a regular basis.
Reclamation needs the flexibility to have new and replacement wells designed and drilled using current industry standards and meeting Arizona State Requirements.
Currently, Reclamation operates and maintains 126 wells located in the following four well fields:
(1) Yuma Valley
(2) Yuma Mesa
(3) South Gila Valley
(4) 242 Well Field
Existing wells vary from a minimum depth of 150 feet to a maximum depth of 1,200 feet. Flow rates vary from 1,800 to 4,000 gallons per minute.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Reclamation is standardizing its well designs and drilling as much as practical in the Yuma area.
Reclamation’s current drainage wells are approaching the end of their useful life or are experiencing reduced pumping capacity due to various existing conditions (i.e., collapsed well, damaged screens, iron bacteria, etc.). Reclamation has standardized local well designs utilizing between 18 and 24-inch diameter steel well casing pipe and 16-inch diameter Type 316L large diameter stainless-steel (Hi Flow) rod-based, wire-wrapped well screen with a design collapse depth of up to 600 feet. The wire wrapped screen will be supplied in 10 and 20-foot sections with 6-inch beveled weld rings on both ends with a 16-inch type 316L stainless steel weld collar attached to one end.

REQUIREMENTS
General - The Contractor shall furnish all of the equipment and materials as specified in the schedule and deliver them to the Bureau of Reclamation, Yuma Area Office, 7301 Calle Agua Salada, Yuma, Arizona 85364. Contractor shall deliver, as listed, the 18 to 24-inch diameter, .375- inch wall mild steel casing pipe in 20-foot sections; and as specified 10 and 20-foot, 16-inch diameter, type 316L large diameter stainless steel, rod-based, wire-wrapped well screen of the sizes listed in the bid schedule and as detailed.
SPECIFICATIONS
Mild Steel Casing Pipe:
The mild steel casing pipe shall be furnished in 20-foot lengths; +/- ½ inch. Mild steel casing pipe shall be fabricated of mild steel, .375" wall and shall have beveled ends for the welding.
The ends shall be beveled and faced on the outside to an angle of 35 degrees with a tolerance of plus or minus 2 ½ degrees and with a width of root face 1/16-inch plus or minus 1/32-inch edges for welding. Pipe shall be single joint welded electronically, constructed with only one parallel seam. No spiral welded pipe will be allowed. Pipe shall be rolled to allow less than +/- 1/32-inch diameter deviation from roundness and weld intrusion to the inner pipe. The 20-foot section of pipe shall be made from one continuous plate material and not spliced to construct the full pipe length of 20 foot. Mild steel pipe supplied shall meet the requirements of ASTM A53 grade B ERW weld-seamed pipe.
Stainless Steel Well Screens:
The furnished well screen shall be 16-inch outside diameter rod-based, wire-wrapped, continuous slot, and large diameter type SAE/ANSI/AISI 316L Stainless Steel with the various slot widths as detailed in the bid schedule. The supplied stainless steel well screen shall be designed for a maximum collapse depth of 600 feet and shall be supplied with 6-inch weld rings on both ends. Slot openings shall be clean and free of burs. Well screen shall be fabricated from corrosion resistant type 316L stainless steel, cold drawn or cold rolled, wire or bars meeting the requirements of ASTM A493-09 (2009). The screen shall be fabricated by circumferentially wrapping a wire around a circular internal core of longitudinal rods with each intersection between wire wrapping and support rods and securely welded. Support rods shall be equally spaced and made of the same material. Junctions of wire/support rod contacts shall be resistance welded. Wire wrapping shall be wedge shaped with the narrow end welded to the longitudinal rods. Well screen shall be furnished in nominal 10-foot and 20-foot lengths that includes the 6-inch weld rings on both ends.
The end fittings for the supplied well screen shall be Type 316L stainless steel with 6-inch weld rings on both ends and shall be the minimum length required for adequate strength at the joints between the screen sections. End fittings shall be machine beveled and faced for butt welding.
The well screen and all accessories required shall be suitable for the drilling and development of groundwater production wells. (If Type 316L is not available, then stainless steel grade of 316, 304L and then 304 is acceptable in that order only due to less resistance to brackish water.)
