About this file
This document is an attachment containing the technical specifications for a federal contract opportunity to purchase two 2000kVA transformers to support the Hydro Generator Emulation Platform at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Flatirons Campus.
The transformers will provide the necessary electrical infrastructure to integrate the Hydro Generator Emulation Platform, which includes two 1.25 MW motors to emulate a hydro turbine and generator. NREL is seeking quotes from vendors capable of providing transformers meeting the specified requirements, including 2000kVA rating, 13.2kV primary and 4160/2400V secondary voltages, 60Hz, for high elevation up to 6000ft, with delivery within 32 weeks. Optional capabilities include a non-load break disconnect inside the tank. Quotes must provide cost breakdowns and assume NREL will handle physical installation at the Flatirons Campus. This procurement is being issued under Solicitation Number RFQ_2024021126 by the Department of Energy Office of Science.

Two 2000kVA Transformers for ARIES.1666 Variable Speed Hydro Generator - Site Infrastructure
7/02/2024
BACKGROUND
This procurement provides site-infrastructure equipment to integrate the Hydro Generator Emulation Platform (ARIES.1140) at the Grid Integration Research Pad (GIRP) area at Flatirons Campus.
The Hydro Generator Emulation Platform is two platforms currently being built off-site by a vendor. One platform will contain the power electronic controls including two Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). The second platform will house two 1.25 MW motors to emulate a hydro turbine (motive force) and the other motor will emulate the driven electric generator.
This will be a regenerative configuration to provide electricity back to the Campus’ 13.2 kV electrical bus. The dyno motors will function individually or in tandem and will offer a mechanical coupling for an up to 2.5MW hydro-generator, as Device-Under-Evaluation.
These capabilities will allow demonstrations of hydro dynamics tied to the electric grid at MW-scale.
OBJECTIVE
National Renewal Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking to purchase two 2000kVA transformer to sufficiently power the VFDs on the emulation platform.
These transformers will provide the necessary electrical infrastructure to support the Hydro Generator Emulation Platform by utilizing existing electrical bus feeds at the GIRPs.
