About this file

This document outlines requirements for two cassette printing systems. The cassette printers must use laser printing with 2D barcodes to produce permanent, indelible histology cassette printing with high-resolution text and barcodes. They must print directly onto cassettes to eliminate handwriting, and cassettes must have a 99.5% scan rate. The cassette printers must have a small footprint, capacity to print and organize up to 100 cassettes at a time in a built-in cassette organization system holding a minimum of 100 cassettes. The system must accommodate at least 4 cassette types and colors without rotating cassettes to eliminate jams. Cassette printers must print at 12 cassettes per minute with minimal jams, support both on-demand and batch printing for attached-lid cassettes without requiring ribbons, printheads or tapes. Cassette printers must interface with the VISTA laboratory information system, have been on the market for at least 5 years with positive performance, and provide quiet printing. Installation is required at the two specified VA locations.

Description

Pathology and Laboratory service is in need of (2) new cassette printing systems. The function of this system is to ensure that patient anatomic pathology samples and tissue blocks are not hand labelled. This is done for patient safety. Incorrectly identifying a handwritten cassette and creating patient slides against the wrong tissue block are both known errors that can be made when using a manual process. The cassette printer minimizes human error in this process.

The cassette printer must use laser printing with 2D barcodes.

The printer must produce permanent, indelible histology cassette printing with high-resolution text and barcodes.

The cassette printer must print directly onto the cassette, eliminating the need for handwriting on labels.

Cassettes must have a ≥99.5% scan rate.

The cassette printer must have a small footprint. Space in the histology labs is very limited.

The cassette printer must have the capacity to print and organize up to 100 cassettes at a time.

The cassette printer must have a built-in cassette organization system, which holds a minimum of 100 cassettes.

The cassette organization system must be able to accommodate at a minimum 4 different cassette types and colors at once.

There must be no rotation of cassettes involved in the printing process, to eliminate jamming of cassettes.

The cassette printer must have minimal to no cassette jams during printing.

The cassette printer must print at a rate of ≥12 cassettes per minute.

The cassette printer must be capable of both on demand and batch cassette printing.

Cassettes must have attached lids.

The cassette printer must not require ribbon, printheads or tapes.
