Road surface aggregate will be provided by the Forest Service at the rock pit located on the 8000470 road at mile post 0.3. This service is incidental to the work.

2.26. TASK 2: IN-STREAM RESTORATION – The following are subtasks:

The Contractor shall provide log jam structures IAW with attached drawings, on site COR may serve as advisor who may adjust the designs in response to the dynamic nature of instream work and present site conditions.

The instream activity shall include pioneering access routes from access roads, such as Spur 1 and Spur 2, to structure sites (Work Sites) flagged by the COR, transporting trees and logs from source areas to structure sites, placing trees and logs for structures, excavating pools in-stream channel, constructing gravel bar structures, placing erosion control devices and decommissioning access routes and road. All of the trees, including those with rootwads attached, and treetops, shall be hauled/skidded directly to the Work Sites in accordance with Task 1 Tree Collection and hauling, Access & Staging.

2.27. Log Jam Placement: Each of the log jams shall be strategically located to accomplish specific restoration objectives. Most of the log jams will be constructed along the edges of the current stream channel or on the floodplain.

2.27.1. Equipment may at times work in or around flowing water up to five feet deep.

Equipment may transport large boulders 4 CY in diameter and greater, cobble and gravel.

2.27.2. In addition, equipment shall transport trees and brush and large wood (up to but not limited to >30” DBH, 60-80 ft. in length, approximately 75% or more with rootwads attached) from designated tree collection sites to desired locations (structure sites).

2.27.3. Equipment shall excavate trenches, contour banks and stream channels and place trees, woody debris, boulders, cobble and gravel in the stream channel and banks as directed by COR.

2.27.4. The amount of wood per structure depends on the structure type and location and ranges from 5 to about 15 pieces of wood per structure as shown on the drawings.

2.27.5. All of the log jams shall be designed and constructed to remain stable during large flood events.

2.27.6. A large portion of each structure shall be buried below the streambed or trenched into the stream banks. Pools located adjacent to these log structures shall be excavated and the stream materials shall be incorporated into the

Margaret Creek Stream Restoration Phase 2 Page 12 of 13 floodplain and/or placed behind the logjam. The structures would also utilize an interlocking construction.

2.28. Typical Site Design:

2.28.1. Typical Log Structure: buried along the streambank would consist of several anchor trees, the tops of which would be buried or driven into the ground or stream bank at an angle to the river. If rootwads are attached, they would be exposed and face the water typically pointing upstream. Other trees should be woven through these anchors, and smaller woody debris and slash should be jackstrawed and packed into the orifices of the woven matrix of trees. These structures are typically placed on the downstream end of the bends where woody debris naturally accumulates. This type of placement encourages initiating and maintaining natural pool scour.

2.28.2. Typical Gravel bar and island point bar. The typical log structure on gravel bars and island point bars are constructed by burying several logs into the ground to serve as pilings followed by placing additional trees and slash on the upstream side of pilings and weaving them into pilings. These structures are designed to scour and maintain pools and to develop or maintain island and side channel habitat.

2.28.3. Typical channel excavation and wood structure placement shall be conducted out of flowing water wherever practical. Most sites require pools to be excavated near log jams due to the coarseness of the bed and potential for shallow bedrock. Test areas may be excavated prior to any placement of trees or excavation of the logjam.

2.29. TASK 3 Option Item:

2.29.1. Restore drainage on Spur Road #1 marked location on Figure 3.

2.29.2. Remove fill, creating a swale or waterbar across the Spur road to open up drainage.
