STATUS SCREENS:
The STATUS screens allow to verify the parameters which were entered in the configuration and administration screens and the identities of the PLC inputs and outputs. Refer to flow chart.
CONFIGURATION SCREENS:
The following configuration screens allow entering the pertinent identified parameters. Some application may require additional configuration screens.
BACKWASH SETUP SCREEN:
Periodic backwash Hrs. This parameter forces a periodic backwash when the system did not backwash within the time set. For example, for a set time of 24 hours, the system will be forced to backwash every 24 hours if the accumulation of contaminants inside the vessel was insufficient to trigger the backwash from the differential pressure switch.
The default setting is 24 hours.
Backwash Duration Sec: The duration of the backwash for one vessel.
The default setting is 8 min.
Frequency Backwash HR: This warning indicates that there is a high backwash frequency on the filter. The system will display this warning if it needs to backwash twice within the time set in the configuration. For example, if the setting is 12 hours and if the system backwashes twice within 12 hours, it will display the warning. This warning is normal during the first weeks of operation. If it occurs after the filter has been known to work properly, check for a source of contamination (work on piping) and also check the media quality. Refer to the appropriate section of the operation and maintenance manual for media inspection. This warning does not prevent the system from working properly.
If 0 is entered, the message of backwash frequency warning is disabled.
The default setting is 1 hour and should be adjusted in regards to the application.
MINI BACKWASH SETUP SCREEN:
Mini backwash duration setpoint: The duration of the mini backwash for one vessel. The default setting is 60 sec.
Mini backwash frequency timer setpoint: The mini backwash will be triggered every X minute to help eliminate any air accumulation inside the tanks.
The default setting is 180 min.
SMALL INJECTION SETUP SCREEN: (Optional)
Injection frequency setpoint: The number of backwashes requested to initiate the small injection. The default setting is 3.
Backwash small injection chemical time: Percentage of the backwash duration during which the small injection operates.
The default setting is 70%.
BIG INJECTION SETUP SCREEN: (Optional)
Cleaning frequency every BW: This parameter is the number of backwashes at which the large injection will occur. If 30 is entered, this large injection scenario will occur every 30 backwashes. The default setting is 30.
Injection timer cleaning minutes setpoint: Duration of the injection for the large injection scenario.
The default setting is 3 minutes.
Soaking timer minutes timer: Duration for the soaking following the large injection cycle.
The default setting is 10 minutes.
ADMINISTRATION SCREENS:
The following configuration screens allow entering the pertinent identified parameters or to provide the identified action.
VALVE SETUP SCREEN:
The closing and opening time are factory adjusted in function of the valves type.
They should not require to be readjusted in the field. An alarm is triggered if the valve is not in the expected position after the set time has elapsed. Below these parameters are factory adjusted in function of the unit configuration. They should not require to be readjusted in the field
GENERAL SETUP SCREEN:
Each button allow to enable or disable the identified equipment.
FORCE OUTPUT SETUP SCREEN:
This screen features all buttons which allow the closing and opening for all valves.
MAINTENANCE SCREEN:
Maintenance reminder: This set point refers to the periodic maintenance reminder.
The default setting is 365 days
Media cleaning reminder: This set point refers to a media visual inspection to evaluate additional needs for media cleaning. The default setting is 180 days.
Both warning can be reset from this screen.
ALARM SCREEN:
Whenever an alarm is being triggered it is displayed at the top of the main screen. The menu screen must be selected in order to access the alarm screen in order to confirm and eliminate the alarm using the reset button.
The screen displays all alarms which occurred on the filtration system with their time of occurrence.
The types of alarms are as follows:
HI BACKWASH FREQ – This warning indicates that there is a high backwash frequency on the filter. The screen will display this warning if the system has been backwashed twice within the time set in the configuration. This warning is normal during the first weeks of operation. If it occurs after the filter has been known to work properly, check for a source of contamination (work on piping) and also check the media quality. Refer to the appropriate section of the operation and maintenance manual for media inspection. This warning is not displayed when a backwash is triggered manually. This warning does not prevent the system from working properly.
MAINTENANCE REQUIRED – This is a periodic reminder to do the maintenance on the system. The operator needs to perform the maintenance on the filter by checking the valves, inspecting the media and checking the pump for leaks.
Please refer to the maintenance section in this manual. This reminder does not prevent the system from working properly.
MEDIA CLEANING REQUIRED – This is a periodic reminder to do the media cleaning on the system. Please refer to the media cleaning section in this manual. This reminder does not prevent the system from working properly.
ALARM VALVE FAULT – The PLC has detected the failure of the electric actuator. Investigate for the proper valve operation (motor, auxiliary switch).
ALARM PUMP FAULT - (filtration and backwash if applicable). The motor starter did not engage when required. Reset the overload inside the panel. Check the pump SFA on the nameplate and compare it with the overload setting. Check also for a different setup in the piping that could create too much flow through the pump.
ALARM SAND TRAP – (If applicable). The differential pressure through the sand trap has reached a critical point. The sand trap must be cleaned. If the alarm happens too often, the debris in the sand trap must be identified and Neptune Benson must be contacted for evaluation.
ALARM BASKET STRAINER – (If applicable). The differential pressure through the basket strainer has reached a critical point. The basket strainer must be cleaned.

THE NEW CLASSIC VORTISAND QUADRUPLE
INJECTOR (PATENT PENDING)
The classic Vortisand already functions in a way which is far superior to any standard filtration systems. The R&D team has recently developed the new quadruple injection Vortisand, which further increase the overall performance of the fil-ter in several aspects. This new design allows the Vortisand technology to outperform all competitors in the field of high-efficiency filtration systems. This new design brings a unique and unparalleled filtration system to the market.
Here are some of the advantages of this new injection system:
BETTER FILTRATION CAPACITIES
With the former single injector system, only a single vortex is created, and inevitably only a portion of the filter is thouroughly active in the filtration process. On high solids loading situations, this can sometimes cause a hydraulic imbalance which could bring preferential channels in the media, or “channelling”. The quadruple injec-tion system, by optimizing the Vortisand active surface, greatly minimizes the risk of this phenomenon, and does so without compromise. Furthermore, this unique and patent pending injector will typically increase the filtration run by 5 to 10%.
BETTER BACKWASH
This same new injection system, with its four head design, also increases the efficiency of the backwash process as it can capture the dirty bakwash water on a 360 degree angle. Also, being located on the top section of the vessel, this allows for a plug flow design which increases again the speed at which the dirty backwash water is drawn from the Vortisand. This entails a water savings between. 20 and 50% compared with the traditional injector design. The example below shows just how much more efficient the backwash process has been further improved.
