1. SCOPE
This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, orientation, and test requirements for an incline/decline conveyor system in Building 160 at Cannon AFB, NM. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the cover purchase description (PD), and Air Force (AF) Drawing ZCN102-01. This appendix is intended to cover all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete the installation of the system.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the Cover PD.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The incline/decline conveyor system shall be installed according to AF Drawing ZCN102-01 and shall hereafter be referred to as conveyor, except where specifically noted. The conveyor shall be used to transport loaded tote pans/tote boxes up an incline or down a decline and shall interface with the mezzanine specified in Appendix A. The conveyor system shall consist of the following components:
a. Rough top belt.
b. Frames.
c. Floor supports.
d. (Center/End) drive unit with (underhung/sidemounted) motor.
e. (Center/End) take-up unit.
f. All rollers necessary for proper conveyor operation.
g. Power feeder.
h. Nose over bed.
i. Mechanical fasteners and all other items required to install an operational conveyor system.
j.One powered 180 degree curved section, two straight

3.2. CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.1. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.1.1. SYSTEM OPERATION
The conveyor shall be used to transport tote boxes/tote pans from the ground floor to the top of the existing mezzanine.
3.2.1.2. CAPACITY
The conveyor shall have a minimum live load capacity of 150 pounds per square foot. The tote pans/tote boxes shall exhibit no downward sliding due to their weight or conveyor belt friction. The conveyor shall be capable of transporting items ranging from the weight of an empty tote to 150 pounds per square foot. The conveyor shall not be capable of starting if overloaded.
3.2.1.3. DEFLECTION UNDER LOAD
The rollers, frame, and frame supports shall not exhibit lateral deflection greater than 1/360th of the unsupported length when fully loaded. The rollers shall not exhibit permanent deformations.
3.2.1.4. ROLLER/PULLEY MOTION
The rollers/pulleys shall exhibit only rotational motion and shall not rotate in an eccentric manner during operation.
3.2.1.5. CONVEYOR SPEED
The conveyor drive shall provide a constant conveying velocity of 60 +/- 1 feet per minute.
3.2.2. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.2.1. BELTING
On all slanted and nose-over portions of the conveyor the belting shall be rough top, polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) plastic type, with a single-ply, 100 percent polyester, solid-woven, carcass impregnated and coated with PVC plastic. All belting for the power feeders shall be the same as specified above, except that it shall be smooth top instead of rough top. The
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 3 belts shall have a minimum working tension of 120 pounds per inch, and shall utilize pin belt lacing type fasteners. If the belts are split type, the edges shall be sealed with a flexible compound to prevent fraying of the carcass. There shall be a 1- 1/2 inch clearance between the side rail and the edge of the belt along both sides of the conveyor. Belt width shall be at least 24 inches, with a 12 inch takeout piece for every 30 feet of conveyor. Belting shall be centered to maintain an even clearance between side rails during operation. Belting shall remain straight and taut during operation. All tools required for belt splicing and installing and removing lacing shall be provided by the Contractor. Belt tracking shall be adjusted by adjustment of pulleys or rollers.
3.2.2.2. FRAMES
All frames shall be standard 10 foot (or manufacturer's standard) sections of minimum 3-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch, 10-gauge formed steel channel, or equivalent as approved by the COTR.
The frame members shall be securely fastened by bolts with lock washers or self-locking nuts. The frames shall be rigidly cross braced (top and bottom) with minimum 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 3/16 inch structural angle, or equivalent as approved by the COTR. There shall be a minimum of four equally spaced cross braces per 10-foot section. End stops shall be provided at the downstream end of the conveyor to keep tote pans from rolling off the ends.
The end stops shall be welded or bolted to the frame and shall stop the conveyed items without causing damage to them.
3.2.2.3. FLOOR SUPPORTS
Each floor support shall include two columns, two base plates, and cross bracing. Each base plate shall be drilled or punched to accept two lag bolts. The columns shall be minimum 10-gauge formed steel channel with 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 1/8 inch structural angle cross braces, or equivalent as approved by the COTR.
Supports shall have a lockable, continuously adjustable (3 inches up and 3 inches down), height adjustment device. The supports shall be spaced a maximum of 10 feet apart. Frame joints shall utilize a common support. All base plates shall be bolted to the floor with 1/2 inch diameter lag bolts. No part of the conveyor shall be supported from walls, ceilings, or building supports. Floor supports shall have a minimum height not less than 36” and not more than 45”
3.2.2.4. GUARDRAILS

Guardrails shall be installed to extend 3 inches above the conveying surface. A vertical adjustment of a minimum 3 inches up and a minimum 3 inches down shall be provided. Conveyor guardrails and their brackets shall be braced and bolted to the frames such that they will not vibrate loose. The conveyor guardrails may be of either continuous steel angle, channel, or of the bar or rod type designed to prevent items from falling to the floor.
3.2.2.5. ROLLERS
The conveyor shall use either rollers or slider beds as specified below.
3.2.2.5.1. CARRIER ROLLERS
The conveyor, nose-over bed, and power feeder conveyor shall have carrier rollers. Carrier rollers shall have 1.9 inch minimum diameter steel tubing with a minimum 16-gauge wall thickness. The rollers shall be installed such that the tops of the rollers extend a minimum of 1/4 inch above the frame.
3.2.2.5.2. SLIDER BED
The conveyor shall have a slider bed. The slider bed shall be minimum 12-gauge steel. Bed shall run the length of the conveyor. Slider bed and belt shall exhibit no greater than .30 coefficient of sliding friction.
3.2.2.5.3. SNUBBER ROLLERS
Snubber rollers shall be 2-1/8 inch minimum diameter steel tubing with a minimum 16-gauge wall thickness. They shall be mounted on maximum 10-foot centers using minimum 10-gauge steel brackets with slotted bolt holes, or an equivalent method approved by the COTR.
3.2.2.5.4. RETURN ROLLERS
Return rollers shall be 1.9 inch minimum diameter steel tubing with a minimum 16-gauge wall thickness. They shall be mounted on maximum 10-foot centers using minimum 10-gauge steel brackets with slotted bolt holes, or an equivalent method approved by the
COTR.

Axles shall be a minimum 7/16 inch hex cold-rolled steel. All axles shall be of the through type and shall be retained by hog rings or and equivalent method.
3.2.2.7. BEARINGS
3.2.2.7.1. ROLLER BEARINGS
Conveyor roller bearings shall be semiprecision, antifriction ball bearings. All bearings shall have a minimum static load rating of 150 pounds, and a rated life of 30,000 hours in accordance with AFBMA STD 9-78. Bearings shall have separate steel inner and outer rings and shall be constructed such that no ball load carrying portions of the rings are of formed sheet steel. Bearings shall have a nonmetalic retainer, and shall be prelubricated at the factory with grease which shall last in sufficient quantity and lubricating ability for the rated life of the bearings. Bearings shall have labyrinth seals on both sides. Bearings shall be capable of turning freely in-hand without sliding contact occurring between balls and races.
Bearings shall be securely mounted in the rollers.
3.2.2.7.2. MOUNTED BEARINGS
If mounted bearing units are used for pulleys or rollers, they shall utilize precision-grade ball bearings rated in accordance with AFBMA STD 9-78 for a rated life of 30,000 hours. Mounted bearings shall have cast mounts. There shall be no slippage between the bearing inner race and shaft. Mounted bearings shall be grease packed and either permanently sealed or regreasable. Regreasable bearings shall have seals which allow for old grease to escape during regreasing.
3.2.2.8. PULLEYS
3.2.2.8.1. DRIVE PULLEY
All drive pulleys shall be of minimum 14-gauge steel tubing, and shall have a molded rubber lagged-face or be crowned with a friction surface. Conveyors of 20 feet in length or less shall have minimum 4 inch diameter pulleys with minimum 1 inch diameter, cold-rolled steel shafts; otherwise, minimum 8 inch diameter pulleys with minimum 1-3/16 inch diameter cold-rolled steel shafts shall be used.
3.2.2.8.2. END IDLER PULLEYS

End idler pulleys shall be minimum 4 inch diameter and minimum 12-gauge steel tubing, and shall be of the crowned face type.
3.2.2.8.3. TAKE-UP PULLEYS
Take-up pulleys shall be a minimum 4 inch diameter and a minimum 12-gauge steel tubing with a minimum 1 inch diameter cold-rolled steel shaft. Take-up pulleys shall be of the crowned face type, with a minimum of 10 inches of adjustment to provide 20 inches of belt take-up for tensioning and tracking purposes.
3.2.2.9. POWER FEEDER
The power feeder shall be powered through sprockets and chains from the end idler pulley on the conveyor. The sprockets and chains shall be completely enclosed in easily removable guards.
Power feeder shall assist in pushing/pulling items onto/off of the conveyor, and shall minimize the bridging of items in the up or down travel mode. The power feeder shall be at least as long as the longest dimension of the tote boxes/tote pans.
3.2.2.10. NOSE-OVER BED
Nose-over bed shall be welded or bolted to the top end frame of the conveyor section to provide a continuous belt for smooth, gentle action at points of change in the plane of the conveyor.
3.2.2.11. TOTE PANS/TOTE BOXES
The Contractor shall provide 30 tote pans/tote boxes. They shall be rectangular and shall be made of molded fiberglass or high density polyethylene with a 150 pound capacity. Tote pans/tote boxes shall be the nesting type and shall have a height of 6 inches, a length of 12 inches, and a width of 18 inches. The tote pans/tote boxes shall have two recessed molded handles for ease of grasp.
3.2.2.12. INCLINATION ANGLE
The conveyor shall be installed at the manufacturers suggested inclination angle.
3.2.2.13. UPPER AND LOWER STRAIGHT SECTIONS
Powered straight sections shall be installed as indicated on AF Drawings ZCN102-01. Each straight section shall index the entire length of each section in the direction of travel. The
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 7 lower straight section shall interface with the incline/decline section. The upper straight section shall interface with the curve section.
3.2.2.13.1. STRAIGHT SECTION GUARD POSTS
A conveyor guardrail shall be installed the full length of the lower straight section on the mezzanine side and from the incline/decline conveyor to the indexing point of the lower straight section on the other side. Guardrails are not required for the upper straight section. Guardrails shall extend 3 inches above the conveying surface. A vertical adjustment of a minimum 3 inches up and a minimum 3 inches down shall be provided. Conveyor guardrails and their brackets shall be braced and bolted to the frames such that they will not vibrate loose. The conveyor guardrails may be of either steel angle, channel, or of the bar or rod type designed to prevent items from falling to the floor. Guardrails shall be continuous to prevent conveyed items from binding or snagging at guardrail joints.
3.2.2.14. LIVE ROLLER ACCUMULATION CONVEYOR
The upper level section shall be live roller accumulation conveyor (LRAC). The LRAC shall be of the live roller (zero pressure) type. When accumulating material, the line pressure with the conveyor running shall not be at a level to cause vertical or horizontal jackknifing of material. The accumulation features shall not affect the transportation of individual items at the specified operational speed. When released, material being accumulated shall automatically restart and continue to travel. V-belt LRAC shall not be acceptable.
3.2.2.15. POWER BELT CURVE
A powered 180 degree slider-bed or roller-bed curve section shall be installed as indicated on AF Drawing ZCN102-01. The curve section shall provide smooth transfer of conveyed property to and from the conveyor components adjacent to the curves. The curve section's centerline speed shall match the main conveyor line speed. Guardrails shall be located on both sides of the curve section. The guardrails shall be fabricated of minimum 18 gauge sheet steel or equivalent. Guardrails shall be a minimum of 12 inches high and shall be attached and braced to the curved conveyor section, running the entire length of the curve. The edges of the guardrails shall be flanged and/or tapered to
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 8 prevent straps of conveyed property from becoming caught on the guardrails. The powered curve section shall adhere to the specifications herein.
3.2.3. ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.3.1. POWER SOURCE
The Government-furnished power source is as detailed in the Cover PD. A distribution panel and circuit breakers shall be furnished and installed by the Contractor. The Contractor shall furnish and install all necessary wiring and equipment for power distribution to the system in accordance with NFPA 70-96.
3.2.3.2. CONDUIT
All wiring shall be encased in electrical metallic tubing or rigid metal conduit in accordance with NFPA 70-96. No wiring/conduit shall be run on the floor. All conduit from the power panels shall be run overhead to the conveyors.
3.2.3.3. GROUNDING
Each component of the system shall be properly grounded in accordance with Article 250, NFPA 70-96.
3.2.3.4. WIRING
All wiring shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70-96. Wiring shall be uniquely coded, or labeled at both ends so that it can be easily traced.
3.2.3.5. CONTROLS
Electrical controls shall conform to the applicable requirements of NEMA ICS 2-83. All controls shall be permanently marked.
Controls shall be located for simultaneous hand operation with spacing design based on human engineering per MIL-STD-1472D.
Controls shall be located so they do not cause interference in the conveying process and cannot be accidentally activated.
3.2.3.6. CONTROL PANELS
The contractor shall provide a minimum of two control panels, which shall be optimally located for ease of access and use by conveyor operators. Conveyor control panels shall be located at each end of the conveyor, one on the ground floor, and one on
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 9 the mezzanine level. Control panels shall not be exposed to mechanical damage. The control panels shall include as a minimum: push-buttons for Forward and Reverse; Stop; an illuminated mushroom shaped manual reset type button for Emergency Stop; and a light to signal power on. While the conveyor is in motion, pushing any button, other than the stop button or an emergency stop, shall have no effect on the conveyor travel. All push-buttons shall be mounted with a stainless steel cover plate. All controls shall be clearly marked or color coded.
3.2.3.6.1. FORWARD BUTTON
When a forward button is depressed, start-up warning devices shall be activated for at least five seconds prior to activation of any conveyor system. The horn shall shut off at the same time the system begins moving and the beacon shall continue to operate while the conveyor is running. All forward buttons shall be green in color. While the conveyor is in motion, pushing any button, other than the emergency stop button, shall have no effect on the conveyor travel.
3.2.3.6.2. REVERSE BUTTON
When a reverse button is depressed, start-up warning devices shall be activated for at least five seconds prior to activation of any conveyor system. The horn shall shut off at the same time the system begins moving and the beacon shall continue to operate while the conveyor is running. All reverse buttons shall be green in color. While the conveyor is in motion, pushing any button, other than the emergency stop button, shall have no effect on the conveyor travel.
3.2.3.6.3. STOP BUTTON
When a stop button is depressed, all conveyors shall stop. All stop buttons shall be red in color.
3.2.3.6.4. EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON
Each control panel shall have one illuminated manual reset type emergency stop button. All personnel interfacing with the conveyor system shall have easy access to the emergency stop buttons. The system can be stopped any time during normal operation by depressing the emergency stop buttons. After the emergency is over, the system shall restart by pulling outwards on the emergency stop button that was depressed and then depressing the system start (forward or reverse) button. The
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 10 light within the emergency stop button shall illuminate whenever any emergency stop in the system has been activated. The light shall remain illuminated until all emergency stop buttons in the system have been reset. This light shall be a bright red in color. All emergency stop buttons shall be clearly labeled as to their purpose, intent and meet or exceed all other requirements set forth in this PD.
3.2.3.6.5. POWER ON LIGHT
The control panels shall be provided with a power on indicating light. Whenever the key switch is moved to the on position, a power on indicating light shall illuminate. This light shall remain illuminated until the key switch is moved to the off position or electrical power to the system is disconnected.
This light shall be blue in color.
3.2.3.7. START-UP WARNING DEVICE
All powered conveyor systems shall be equipped with start-up warning devices. The start-up warning devices shall meet all requirements specified within MIL-STD-1472D and ANSI B20.1-90.
The start-up warning device shall consist of at least two horns and two beacon lights located optimally in the facility for maximum effect. The light shall illuminate at least 5 seconds prior to conveyor movement and shall remain illuminated until the conveyor comes to a complete stop. The horns shall have a frequency between 200 and 500 hertz. The horns shall activate at least five seconds prior to the start of the conveyor and continue until the conveyor starts. The horns shall be easily adjustable from 0 to 105 dB(A). A set of one horn and one beacon light shall be installed on each level. The horns shall activate upon the activation of the conveyor system. All warning devices shall be clearly labeled as to their intent, function and purpose.
3.2.3.8. MOTOR
Motor shall be sized for the full rated live load. The motor shall be three (3) phase, 230/460 volts, 60 cycle and shall be designed for continuous duty at ambient temperature, 20 degrees Fahrenheit to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Motor shall be reversible to allow for two-way travel of the conveyor. The motor shall be underhung/sidemounted. The motor shall be drip proof and have keyed shafts. The gear reducers shall not leak oil, and they shall be of equal horsepower design to the mating motor. Motor shall be equipped with thermal overload devices on each phase per NFPA 70-96, Article 430, part C. Motor shall not restart
Cannon AFB, NM - App D Page 11 automatically when the overload device is reset. Motor shall be of the brake type which prevents roll-down of the conveyor belt after the conveyor is turned off with tote pans/tote boxes still loaded on the belt.
3.2.3.9. CENTER DRIVE UNIT
The main drive pulley/shaft shall use a chain and sprocket. All chain shall have a minimum RC-60 rating. The chain tension shall be adjusted by means of threaded connectors with a maximum take-up of 6 inches. The drive shall be designed for two-way of the conveyor and shall have a negative pull to hold loads back while declining OR reversible motor capability. The drive shall be rigidly braced and completely enclosed in easily removable guards. Drive placement shall not hinder inspection, maintenance, or operation.
3.2.3.10. END DRIVE UNIT
The main drive pulley/shaft shall use a chain and sprocket. All chain shall have a minimum RC-60 rating. The chain tension shall be adjusted by means of threaded connectors with a maximum take-up of 6 inches. The drive shall have a negative pull to hold loads back while declining. The drive shall be rigidly braced and completely enclosed in easily removable guards.
Drive placement shall not hinder inspection, maintenance, or operation.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1. INSPECTIONS
The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
4.2. TEST
The following test shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test. The conveyor shall be tested a total of 10 times. The Contractor shall operate the conveyor.

3.2.2.10. Power feeder and nose over test. The power
feeder and nose over shall be loaded with the Government furnished test loads. The conveyor fails the test if the power feeder and nose over do not maintain correct spacing between loads due to conveyor speed or otherwise.
2. 3.2.1.5. Conveyor speed test. The conveyor shall be load the test load. The conveyor frame shall be mark certain distance and the conveyor shall be start will be taken from the time it takes the load to one mark to the time it takes to get to the othe following equation shall be used to compute the speed:
Conveyor speed (feet/min) = Distance/Time
The conveyor fails the test if its speed exceeds ___ feet per minute.
3. 3.2.1.3. Deflection under load test. The conveyor shall be activated and loaded to full capacity with the test loads. If the rollers, frame, and frame supports exhibit lateral deflection greater than 1/360th of the unsupported length when fully loaded, the conveyor fails the test.
4. 3.2.3.6.4. Emergency stops test. The conveyor shall be activated and then stopped using an emergency stop. The conveyor fails the test if the conveyor is able to be reactivated without resetting the emergency stop.
5. 3.2.2.12. Inclination angle test. The length of the conve and the floor length from the beginning of the c bed to the end of the conveyor bed shall be used compute the angle of inclination as follows:

4.3 CERTIFICATIONS
The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provide to the COTR on or before the start of the quality conformance test.

1. 3.2.3.1. The Contractor has furnished and installed all necessary wiring and equipment for power distribution in accordance with NFPA 70-96.
2. 3.2.3.2. All wiring has been encased in electrical metallic tubing or rigid metal conduit in accordance with NFPA 70-96.
3. 3.2.3.3. Each component of the system has been properly grounded in accordance with Article 250, NFPA 70-96.
4. 3.2.3.4. All wiring has met the requirements of NFPA 70- 96, and is uniquely coded or labeled at both ends so it may be easily traced.
5. 3.2.3.5. Electrical controls conform to the applicable requirements of NEMA ICS 2-83.
6. 3.2.3.8. Motor has been equipped with thermal overload devices on each phase as per NFPA 70-96.
