A. This project replaces a section of 4” steel water line with an HDPE water line serving the USFS Callahan Guard Station. This section of line runs along the edge of a paved county road through the town of Callahan and across private property. It will connect to existing new PVC water line that continues to the Station at one end and an old existing steel line that connects to the water storage tank at the other end. A large portion of the new line is in very close proximity to a new PVC water line serving the town. Extreme care must be used to avoid damage to this line and to adjacent private property.
B. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, supervision, equipment, transportation and materials to perform the following:
Excavating a waterline trench; installing a new 4” HDPE water line; backfill and compaction, installing buried utility marking tape; and patching the road pavement to county specifications contained in the included encroachment permit. All work shall meet requirements shown on the drawings and specified herein.

1. Trench Configuration (not adjacent to existing waterline): The trench shall be excavated to allow the pipe to be aligned in the approximate center. Trench widths shall permit the pipe to be laid and joined properly and to allow for proper placement and compaction of backfill material. In no case shall the trench width be less than the pipe O.D. plus 14 inches. The trench sidewalls shall be as near vertical as possible, except where sloping is permitted by the Project Engineer.
The trench bottom shall provide a firm, uniform and continuous bedding for the pipe. Mounding of trench bottom to support pipe will not be allowed.
2. Trench Configuration (adjacent to existing waterline): The trench shall be excavated to allow the pipe to be aligned adjacent to the existing 3” Callahan or USFS waterline. Trench widths shall permit the pipe to be laid and joined properly and to allow for proper placement and compaction of backfill material.
In no case shall the trench width be less than the pipe O.D. plus 8 inches. The trench sidewalls shall be as near vertical as possible, except where sloping is permitted by the Project Engineer. When excavating in areas with chip seal or asphalt surfacing the trench edges shall be saw cut.
3. Excavation (adjacent to existing Callahan waterline): Trenching is permitted with excavating equipment until sand backfill is encountered. Further excavation shall be by hand or other approved method only until the existing Callahan waterline is suitably exposed to permit the placing of the new waterline adjacent to it. Extra care shall be taken when excavating in areas of cross connections to adjacent homes. A supply of appropriate fittings and pipe shall be kept on site to effect repairs as soon as possible should a breach of the existing waterline occur.
4. Over Excavation (not adjacent to existing waterline): Trenches for all types of pipeline materials shall be over excavated to provide for a minimum 6-inch sand (class 1) bedding.
Trenches in areas of underground water shall be over excavated to allow for 6 inches or more of permeable backfill, as required for Pipe Trench Backfill, as described elsewhere in this section.
Any areas of trench over excavated beyond the lines and grades shown on the plans or specified herein shall be brought back up to proper grade using suitable materials as approved by the Project Engineer. This material shall be compacted to the specified degree prior to placing any pipe or sand bedding in the trench.

Native backfill material may be mechanically screened to meet these requirements.
B. Contractor shall import the type and quantities of backfill materials not found on the job site at his own cost.
C. Compaction: Use vibratory compactors for sands and gravels (noncohesive soils).
Use mechanical tampers for sand and gravel containing a significant portion of fine-grained material, such as silt and clay (cohesive soils). Hand tamp around pipe or cable to protect the lines until adequate cushion is attained. Puddling or water flooding for consolidation of backfill or compaction by wheel rolling with construction equipment will not be permitted. Backfill shall exceed the density of the surrounding embankment.
D. Utility Installation: Shape the trench bottom to ensure uniform contact with the full length of the installed line and remove any sharp-edged materials that might damage the line. Compaction shall be maintained beneath the line.
E. Select Backfill: Fill by hand placement around the utility to just over half depth, and compact in a manner to ensure against lateral or vertical displacement. Place select backfill to 6 inches above the utility line by hand placement in not more than 6-inch layers. Compact each layer to exceed the density of the surrounding embankment.
G. All utilities shall be marked in accordance with Section 02229.
