O’LEARY FIRE LOOKOUT TOWER REHAB

Questions/Answers Cont.

12. Question: On summary of work page 7, paragraph L Sentence 3 states that a new roof penetration is necessary for venting purposes for the refrigerator and range/stove. Does the existing appliances have this venting? Existing appliances do not have any venting.

Answer: There was a vent pipe for a previous appliance and is now covered. The location is above the current location of the existing refrigerator. See photo below:

Existing venting does not show up on any of the drawings nor photos. Can the FS be more specific as to how they want this routed or provide a simple drawings with their intent?

Ratings of Appliances Normally Found In Small Cabins and Lookout Towers

4 Burner Range (8k / burner + 10k Oven)
42,000 btu / hr
Refrigerator
1,600 btu / hr
Total =
43,600 btu / hr

The total is 43,600 btu/hr for this lookout tower. Combustion air is required. The appliance(s) must be installed in a space where the room volume exceeds 50 ft3 / 1000 btu/h of rated input or air shall be supplied from the outside. To supply combustion air, provide:

a) Opt. 1: Two permanent openings. Install one within 12” of the ceiling and one within 12” of the floor. May use two vertical, two horizontal or one each.

i) Each vertical opening shall have a free area of 1 in2 per 4,000 Btu/h of total appliance input rating.

ii) Each horizontal opening shall have a free area of 1 in2 per 2,000 Btu/h of total appliance input rating

b) Opt 2: One permanent horizontal or vertical opening. Locate the opening within 12” of the ceiling. Free area to be 1 in2 per 3,000 Btu/h of the total appliance input rating, and not less than the sum of the areas of all vent connectors in the space.

Combustion air openings may be ducts or louvers. Where louver free area is not known, assume 25% free area for wood louvers and 75% free area for metal louvers and grilles.

There is additional guidance from the local Coconino County.

Lookout Towers. Pipe rising from ground to tower shall be black steel pipe. Pipe may be optionally wrapped with a PVC jacketing or polyethylene pipe wrap to prevent staining of tower struts and reduce corrosion.

a) Pipe sizing calculation between second stage regulator (at tower base) and appliances in the tower to compensate for vertical pressure loss and temperature.

b) Locate a shut off valve just before the piping enters the tower cab. Label the valve.

c) Electrical wire and propane piping shall not climb tower on same leg. Keep 3’ apart.

d) Install no electrical wiring or device that may arc/spark near gas connections.

Appliance Connections: Use flexible corrugated stainless steel pipe with plastic jacket or coating. Each appliance to have a shut off valve and union. Locate valve within 6 ft. of appliance on supply side of union. Install union downstream of valve. Install dielectric unions between dissimilar piping. Install with jumper for bonding when required by NEC.

13. Question: What finished ceiling material would the FS like to see in the Cab?

Answer: The ceiling shall receive the same interior wall finish, Marlite, or an approved equal.
