B. The trench bottom at pipe joints shall be properly excavated to insure adequate bearing of the pipe barrel along its entire length. Care shall be taken not to excavate below the depth required to obtain the specified minimum depth of cover. If over-excavation occurs the excess depth shall be backfilled with moist earth or sand and tamped to a density at least equal to that of the surrounding earth.

02221 – 2

D.

Trenches shall be dry when the trench bottom is prepared. A continuous trough shall be pared or excavated to receive the bottom quadrant of the pipe barrel. In addition, holes shall be excavated for pipe bells so that after placement only the barrel of the pipe receives bearing pressure from the trench bottom. Bell holes shall be excavated such that pipe barrels rest on undisturbed earth.

E.

Preparation of the trench bottom shall be carefully completed so that when the pipe is in final position, it is true to line and grade. The prepared trench bottom shall be free of sharp rocks and debris that may damage the pipe. All rocks greater then 3/4" shall be removed.

F. Depressions in the trench bottom shall be excavated with hand tools to accommodate valves, fittings, etc.

3.02Underground Detection Tape:

A.

General: Detection tape shall be buried with the inscription side up, directly above and for the full length of each individual buried water or sewer line it identifies.

B.

Cover of 3 feet or less: Bury detection tape as follows:

1.

Plastic pipe: Detection tape at not more than 12 inches below finished ground elevation.

C.

Cover more than 3 feet: Bury detection tape as follows:

1.

Plastic pipe at 12 inches below the finished ground elevation.

3.03Backfilling:

A. Waterline Burial

1.

Place water lines on undisturbed earth unless the undisturbed earth does not meet initial backfill requirements as in paragraph 2.02. Engineer may require special bedding material at a 4" depth below the pipe 2.

Special bedding shall be installed to the full width of the trench bottom to a minimum depth of 4” below the pipe and across the trench (four (4) inches minimum depth in any case), and around the pipe to fully support the lower half of the pipe. Compact each layer in 6” maximum lifts as follows: The bedding material shall be moistened or dried to a uniform moisture content greater than 7% suitable for compaction. A whacker type compactor shall be operated over the full width of each layer until visual displacment ceases, but now fewer than 6 complete passes.

02221 – 3

3.

As soon as possible after individual pipe is jointed, sufficient backfill material shall be placed along each side of the pipe to offset conditions that might tend to move the pipe off line and grade. This material shall be compacted to the density specified in A.2. above.

4.

Backfill shall not be completed until pressure and/or leakage tests have been performed and the pipeline is approved by the Engineer. Sufficient backfill shall be placed to prevent pipe movement under pressure tests. This backfill shall be tamped to the density specified in paragraph A.2. All joints, valves, etc., shall remain uncovered for inspection purposes during testing.

5.

The initial backfill over the pipe and all backfill around the pipe shall be placed by hand and tamped. Initial backfill shall be 12” thick around all valves and valve boxes. All initial backfill shall be placed in six (6) inch layers and each layer shall be compacted to the density specified in Paragraph A.2.

B. All Utilities

1.

Subsequent backfill shall be deposited and carefully compacted in layers not to exceed six (6) inches in thickness. Backfill shall be compacted to the density specified in Paragraph A.2.

2.

Six (6) inches of topsoil shall be deposited as final backfill in trench areas where this material had been previously stripped and stockpiled. This topsoil layer shall be compacted sufficiently to remain in place but remain loose enough to allow plant growth.

At any location where backfill has more than 6 inches of settlement, the settlement shall be corrected by reopening the trench to the depth required for proper compaction and then shall be refilled and satisfactorily compacted.

4.

At any location where backfill has settled less than 6 inches below normal ground surface, the Contractor shall provide additional earth fill material to bring the trench elevation to that of normal ground surface. This material shall be compacted to the density of the undisturbed, surrounding ground.

5.

Surplus excavated material remaining on the site upon completion of the backfilling shall be utilized in embankment or removed from the site and disposed of off National Forest Lands.

6. Puddling or water flooding for consolidating the backfill will not be allowed.

The addition of water shall be limited to that needed for increasing the density of the backfill material.

WATER METER

A.

Description: AWWA C702, compound-type, bronze case. Register flow in US

Gallons Designed to register wide flow ranges where varying flow rates are typical.

Meter combines the low flow sensitivity of a disc type meter with the high flow capacity of a turbine-type meter.
